Its a changer...you load it with 5 cassettes.. press the close button select which cassette you want to listen to with the 1,to 5 button then press play and it loads that cassette and plays it....

That's gotta be a complicated motor and tray arrangement. Lucky yours still works. Motor-driven mechanical parts are always the first to fail, if you look at how many CD changers have failed.
