Hi everyone-I just got this JVC 838JW from Canada.
This thing is really in decent shape and it's all there. The cassette door is being repaired right now, that's why it's not in the photos.
BUT-This is a fixer upper-I got it for $50.00!
I worked on this D*@* thing for over 5 hours last night.
Bad sliders!!-Confirmed!
I had the right side going well for a while last night by vigoursly adjusting the balance slider! It sounded pretty good!!
But after adjusting the bass it went out again.
Both the treble & bass sliders don't do much-no affect on sound!
Also after a while of adjusting I got the left side to sound-which again sounded really good but again after touching another slider it went out! Darn-this is a fussy boombox!! I don't like sliders!!

I want to know how in the hell Norm can rebuild these-this must take some patience and diligence! :-O
I really like this thing-all cassette fuctions work but is a little fast on play-I'm working on that.

BTW-What's the difference between the 838JW and the II?

Inside photos also-I have 1 ground wire that I don't know where it goes and a couplke of small black leads also that don't know where they go.Sorry about the inside photos-forgot to have flash on!
BUT this thing will work 100% with good sliders!
I just get some sound right now-Leaking through-can't adjust the volume-it's very l;ow volume right now-leaking current through balance & what-0not.
The volume works and is adjustable when you have 1 side going!-HELP!! :annoyed:

Can anybody help me??!!

My fingers and hands are worn out from last nights tests!

This darn thing is quite clean and the antennas are mint!
Any help would be greatly appreciated-GB. :-)

Hi Ghettoboom,

Congrats on a great find, I too have spent hours on similar boxes!

If this box is anything like the M70, which it internally seems to be, then the black (ground) wire attaches to the ground plate on the back of the rear panel.
More photos would help, especially of the rear inside panel.

I could be wrong, I'm not an expert! But the M70 has the same connection. :-/

Could the other wires be for the external antennae??? These are usually up the top near the tabs for the antennae.
But on the M70, antenna wires are coloured Orange and White :hmmm:

Cheers! :-D

Hi SonyApmFan-These are already there and accounted for.
These that I'm talking about are to unknown areas.
I need slider help.
Good luck with yours and thanks-GB. :-)

Ok, understand. Perhaps try and get the schematic if really unsure.

Haven't played much with sliders, but a good electrical cleaner spray may help?
I'm sure there are those wiser than I who will help out!

Cheers,

Thank-You,Thank You,Thank You!!! Norm These are great interior 838 boombox photos!! Just what I needed!
It looks like one of my black grounds go on the top chassis, now for the other. :-)
This is great!
I will get this thing going but will need attention with sliders.
I'll get back to you later on that after I get everything else tidied up.
Have a super weekend-Jeff(GB) :-) :surf:
