Okay, You all know how I adore my sentimental favorite PH492 but this earlier model I got has got a MUCH punchier bass and freakin' rocks the house! I love the Super bass button with the maxed out bassslider. Holy Guacamole! Fully serviced, cleaned and rebelted by our very own BadBoyBill :smooch: I took it to my local BasketBall courts last night and a party gathered. It was a crowd pleaser. I would be embarrased to admit the 492's defeat in the bass department if I didn't already own these two. The pics are deceiving, but the chrome work is actually great they're just dirty. They've since been cleaned up and sparkly now ;-) What'cha think?

Boomboxes and basketball, two of my favorite things... :-D ...great looking boomer Adam...
Say, Melly, I even played that Kurtis Blow song 'BasketBall' at the Courts. It brought smiles to the older Dude's faces who remember that Jam. :hoveround:

I noticed the bass was much better on the my 480 than 492 and put it down to my 492 being a bit more aged, but it's good to know it's a genuine difference!

Always meant to try them out with their speakers swapped to see if it's the speakers or the amps.

Great score, Adam! These boxes are goddamned monsters and even the most stalwart 'onepiecers only for me' collector should have these two models in their armoury. Always remember these Fishers came out loooong before the mid 80s trend of making threepiecers.

Nice 3 piecer!!! I admit to having more 3 piece radios in my collection than 1 piecers.

That Fisher is deceptively large and must sound awesome.

Congrats,

James.... :-)

So Rick, did Fisher release the 480 first? Then the 490 then, the 492? I always believed they were relesed in numerical sequence :hmmm: Back in 83-84, I only recall seeing the 492...... When My BreakDancing group toured all over South Texas, The 492 we carried along was never beat and I'd never seen any other big PH series.

Yeah, I don't know Adam. I thought they came out around the same time, but the 492 has a much more late 70s look to it than the 480, which looks much more early 80s design from the lay out graphics. That said, they were definitely sold at the same time over here:

'Tis a conundrum we'll probably never know the answer to!

Don't overdo it in the bass department Adam .
I did one day and i blew an amp chip.
I"m happy that you write about the sound comparison between a PH 492 and the PH 480
I don't own a PH 492 but i do own 3 PH 490 's .I guess the sound of a PH 490 and a PH 492 are the same
I do like the sound of the 480 way more. Way punchier bass even with super bass off
I don't know if you connected a headphone to a PH 480 before. Got to try that
I listen to the 480 sometimes with Senheisser HD520 II headphones .Just awesome
I don't get that soundquality when i connect the HD 520 II to the M90
Enjoy your 480 now Adam I know you will

I can tell you Adam the amp chips are very difficult to replace because of the posibilty of overheating chip, especially if you don't use heat sink
