My first Pioneer...

I've always been a bit of a fan of Pioneer audio gear, especially the silver components they sold back in the early 80's. I remember my dad sold his massive Sanusi quadraphonic receiver, Teac tape deck and Dual turnbable back in the day to buy one of those silver component matched systems. It gave him years of faithful service.

Also, my first "serious" tape deck was a Pioneer CT-7R back when I was 14 years old... I used to use my Sharp GF-9292 to plug into the tape deck to make copies of friends' tapes. You know, before you could just use a zip drive, SD card, DVD or CD to pilfer music (that's cheating, isn't it?)...

Anyway, during my boombox shopping, I was also enticed by Pioneer boomboxes and remember falling in love with the looks of this one. I think it was the "new for then" LED VU meters. Ultimately, the open-box Sharp GF-9292 won my dad and I over because of its greatly reduced price at the time, and it's cooler "street" look, otherwise I might have been raving about this box instead, which has a more elegant look to it.

Okay, enough foreplay... here she is: [ebay]280476769714[/ebay]

Anyone heard one of these? I don't remember what they sound like, but Pioneer made some great gear back then, and I have a good feeling about this box, even with the deck not working... (presents just enough challenge for me). I don't expect it to be really loud, that's what I have my M90 for... Just hoping for well-balanced sound and that I can get the deck working okay.

Another thing.... I don't want to be schlepping the same ole' boxes to next years meet... and nobody at the Sunshine mix had any Pioneers that I saw this year... makes me wonder why they are so unpopular? Seems to me these are a tad underrated... or my expectations are too high. Or, do they suck that bad? Did I just waste $63? (Price for shipping was almost the same as what I won the box for).

(Truth be told about that CR-7R deck, it only lasted 5 years or so, developed major transport issues and ended up ****-canned, I really should have gotten one of the older silver faced ones instead, they were built much, much better.)

I like the looks of it! Love the green VUs!

Reminds of my "Silver" (brand) bbx that has green VUs also...

too bad Nakamichi didn't make a portable box since you are such a big fan of their stuff. Prime had the major Pioneer boombox showing 2 years ago

Right... I'd love to have a Nak boombox with the unidirectional auto reverse that flips the tape for you... That would be freaky, eh???

I remember Prime and his collection.. He had a couple of those really big Pioneers that sounded fantastic. Thinking back to his boomers is what made me decide this might be money and effort well spent... We'll see when it gets here. This box only consumes 19W, so I'm not expecting overwhelming power. But, if it sounds good at medium and low volume and just needs some belts, I'll be happy.

I just paid for it today, so I expect I'll get it sometime next week. More pics and a sound update will follow then...

Yeah, that boombox does not get super loud but it'll go all the way with no distortion. I think the amps are tuned kind of low to keep distortion down. My guess is that it'll get as loud as any box in the same size/class with some tweaking of the amp input signal levels but I say, that's what M90's are for!

I was cranking the same (similar, SK-95) a few days ago. See my "what boomboxes are you playing right now" thread, from 2 days ago. But YES it sounds great, sound is well balanced, and the VU's are the nicest looking, of any, in my opinion. Congrats on a great score.

Yeah, great box! :w00t:
And just seen a difference.
Comparing with norm´s box, this one owns no steel bars on the speakers :hmmm:

nice "first" pioneer. Congrats.

I have the SK-95 and SK-71, and at least with the ones I have, the SK-71 has better bass.

Interesting... different versions, eh??? And I just noticed that the condensor mic's are actually built into the handle?

Hey, that clock has its advantages... like for use as a boomer clock radio perhaps.

Sorry to hear about your tape drive, Roman.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys... I'm starting to feel really jazzed about this one...

I think a first time swap of the Nak auto reverse mechanism into a boombox should be attempted, like you said the one like you had at the meet where the tape flips not the head.

here is the same box ( I think) from the 2009 meet, you took the picture:

Way to go, JT! I had seen that one and thought about watching it. I can't believe that SK-71 only sold for $33. :w00t: We expect a full report when you get it. ;-)

:w00t:

I thought so... Thanks for the refresher... but mine has different speaker covers. Whodathunk there were several variants like that...? different speaker covers, or clock instead of VU meters...

Review to come... Will compare sound to M9990, Panny 5150, Sharp 9292 and M70 and hopefully be able to give a solid frame of reference.

And it´s heavy as a tank! :-)

btw: if anybody needs parts of the tapedeck (must look what´s useable on it), let me know. ;-)
For sure i will part it out and implant some other device.

i have a pretty much flawless sk-95 does dust count as a flaw lol.
seriously tho these boxes are really nice.
they have a really musically exciting sound.
the tuner of mine is extremely nice.
the knobs on mine are really cool too metal and very well placed.
it can pretty much be turned up all the way without crapping out.
pioneer did a great job with this box its a fair size runs on nine d cels i think.
its one of my faves to this day.
i know the tape deck on the sk95 is most likely the most full featured one of all my one piece boxes. cool score.

I've always wanted a Pioneer boomer.
Very nice-BTW I have bought a boombox from this seller before. My Pana DT-680 came from this person.

I have the SK-95 as well. From what I have read, the 71 and 95 are very similar, but only the 95s came with the chrome on the removable grills. The ones with the same body but clocks instead of the super rad (hypnotizing  ) vu lights were different model #s weren't they? SK-31 maybe? Don't remember. Anyway, I don't have another box that sounds as warm and musical as the 95. Kind of like how older Marantz stuff sounds compared to other hifi gear. It also has a programmable tape deck! You can tell it you want to listen to song 3 then 8 then 1... etc. Very cool, and I personally really dig the look. It just doesn't get super loud, I think the setup was for quality not efficiency. The whole thing just seems to ooze quality. Congrats!
