way back when, in my discussions of how much i despise cheap "toy robot" looking post-hip-hop (it was MY culture that gave YOU those tacky things!) boomboxes with their miles of chrome, and in the case of the lasonic, in particuluar, the most HIDEOUS, random even, color & font choices on top of the "was that really necessary?" "high fidelity" logos on each woofer. i'm an artist, and bad aesthetics hurt my eyes. you snowflakes really need to get over others having opinions you don't agree with.

right here, right now, i'm sharing MY CREATIONS, yet, feel free to criticize them if they hurt your eyes. i don't take that stuff personally, even when my own personal creativity is invested, unlike all of you who just buy and collect boomboxes... and weren't even "there in the day" b-boying like me. everyone is entitled to their OPINIONS for which there are never right or wrongs... those are called facts.

so go ahead... put your hater hats on and fee;l free to say how much you hate these designs. just don't talk about ME personally. then it's on. those are MY boundaries... much looser than many of yours.

anyways... here's the only full view pic i have of the lasonic i made around 1991. i WANTED a japanese "no frills" minimalist type box like the JVC "LL cool J" (M90 or something to that effect), but by then, corporate scum had weaponized hip-hop into the new crack, you couldn't buy singles anymore, and there was no reason for anyone to buy boxes anymore... except me as i REFUSE to surrender hip-hop... and by that i mean REAL positive "give it all you got" we're dancing to end gangs humanist hip-hop culture... not rap... which many mistake for the culture. BTW... STOP calling gangsta crap hip-hop! it's hip opposite! it violates the b-boy "thou shalt never TOUCH an opponent in battle"... the very thing that made it a great culture.

i digress... i bought the lasonic because it was the best sounding & deepest bass box i could fin and i liked that it had a full 12 band EQ. i just hated the way it looked and when i couldn't stand looking at the toy robot anymore, i tore it apart and repainted it as an hommage to malcom mc laren's duck rock album, which was always a favorite.

after the lasonic was stolen, i needed a replacement and found many of the top 10 grails, including a J-1 at an audio store, but couldn't get past the ugliness of everything... the fake gold plating on the crown, the fake RTA on the rexel (?) or that pointless fake bubblegum pink button, or the terrible red, yellow, green, white randomly spaced asymmetrical color combo on the 4 woofer disco box, of all the boxes in the shop, the J-1 looked best, but i couldn't wrap my head around paying $220 for a box with a crooked "they all have them" cassette door along with the poorly masked red trim around the woofers, the hastily etched grid pattern around the mid and fake tweeter, the ridiculous "super jumbo" logo or the pointless 3 way tweeter badges... nothing you'd see on a REAL hifi component or a japanese boombox for that matter.

when i decided i'd just duck rock that and went back... all of the boxes were gone. oh well.

i still say the JVC is what a boombox should look like, and with that in mind, i went back and got rid of as much of the tackiness that OFFENDS MY EYES (deal with it! i have to!), oh, like the mismatched cassette door colors & toy mirrored LEDs (something i always hated about my lasonic... REAL boomboxes use VU meters!

then i turned it into what the J-1 would look like if anyone asked my opinion. to me, it looks 10x better than any chinese box going back to a more monocrome businesslike color combo and adding "real" LED meters that could actually be used for monitoring levels, and making the clock, radio dial and speakers bigger.

go on... hate if you have to, but my gut tells me a lot of you would pay big bucks for THAT tecsonic

Oh... My... God...

I would sell body parts to science to get a J1 like that. I'm happy to see you finally finished the illustration. Great work!!

Yeh the J1 looks cool...nice work

Think maybe if you had a little less of a confrontational aggressive attitude maybe you’d face fewer ‘haters’?...just a suggestion

You complain way too damn much.
yes... i have issues with some members of this forum forming a "purge the outsider" troll possee because i "dared" comment on just how hideously fugly the Dynasty ES-555 (aka disco box) is in the "weirdest boomboxes" thread and some members lost their minds and started attempting to bully me into silent submission for having "unauthorized opinions" which ain't ever gonna happen, and makes no kind of sense to begin with. you'll notice i INVITED criticism in MY THREAD because i wouldn't want anyone else to feel like they have to walk on eggshells around me. people should feel free to exercise their first amendment rights up in here, as long as they aren't PERSONAL. that is the only line i'll respect.

YOU DONT LIKE? DONT BUY!
see? you REALLY seem thin skinned there. i had no choice buying the FUGLY lasonic. there were no japanese boomboxes to be had around 1992. i didn't buy it as a conversation piece, but as a functional tool in a desperate attempt to preserve the culture that was stolen from me. clubs stopped playing hip-hop and started playing that dreadful soulless house-techno junk. you couldn't buy discs anymore, and someone had to fight all that lousy low grade new jack, booty rap & gangsta crap. if i didn't buy the lasonic, i'd have no culture to bring with me to the beach. boomboxes were merely TOOLS to share music.

nowadays, if i wanted a boombox, i'd just build my own out of fiberglass with LiOn batteries and class D amps, but i don't need to as my current box will destroy ANYTHING anyone here has from 100 yards...

now that the monsoon season is about over, it's time to put everything together. i've already cruised downtown with just the 8" proel mains, but now i'm going to get another couple 12v x 7a batteries to get that SEALED 15" JBL to move some air as well as cover the sub box with purple crushed velvet. my cats used the box as a scratching post.

EVENTUALLY, i'll put a nylon shell around everything with sound reactive LED internal lighting.

as to the new J-2 pic... i simplified the EQ to make it bigger and fixed the old useless now "sensor" button and turned it into a hifi aesthetic EQ bypass. feel free to share it. as far as i know, it's the best (as in HQ) big boombox boombox image on the net. that's why i created it.

thank you to the supporters. i'm glad that you liked it. i also have an "accurate" (though it's really a hybrid of phonia etc J-1s) illustration as well as one i gold plated. such aesthetics don't suit MY minimalist tastes, but i'll share those too if anyone's interested, though i think i'm going to give those the "J-2" treatment as well & make them more "mine".

some time in the future, i'll put all 3 J-2s and maybe the J-1 up on all of the major royalty free photo sites in full resolution (5154 x 2940) so others won't have to struggle to find high quality boombox art as i have. i'm happy to SHARE my art, though i will also be using it for financial gain too.

if anyone's really nice... i might even consider making a custom variant for them... even labeling buttons "turbo digital" cringe. i considered doing a reggae themed version eg. naming a button "ragamuffin selector"

anyways enjoy the art, or don't

I typed up a whole paragraph, then deleted. After reading this, and your past posts and threads, concluded: what's the point?

This is a boombox ENTHUSIASTS forum. The name of the website sorta gives it away. I only have 1 question for you: why are you here?

If a la Sonic was tacky before then you made me even more tacky cuz it looks like it made out of bubblegum.
All you ever bark about is the loss of Electro music to gangster rap and the fact you couldn't buy a decent old school looking Boombox in an era where they stopped making them.
Plus the fact you brag about a goddamn box it's so badass nobody's ever f****** seen it so it's a bunch of f****** hot air to me. Also if you're so goddamn artistic why don't you design your own f****** box instead of trying to redesign the J-1.

In my opinion weak people always want to play the victim what they do everything in their power to sound like an a******* in the process.

Oh and let's not forget the fact that plenty of b-boy back in the day had a cheap ass boombox not everybody can afford to carry expensive Japanese boombox especially teenagers in the streets with no job like most b- boys back in the day.

I'm a part (one of the founders/organizers) of a collective in Brazil who made monthly basis meetings in the streets with Radios Playing, BBoys dancing and that place (Boomboxery) it's nothing but a REFERENCE to US.

We are in our collective:
BBoys.
DJs
MCs
Graffiti Writers.

We have some customized, some custom builted ones, but 90% of our radios, are originals and Japanese as well.

As a Hip Hop Soldier, you just show some respect with all models, but they was the "Catalist" of our beloved culture back in the days!!

Cheers.

Nice work on the J1, now please give the self righteous crap a rest and grow up.
It is perfectly acceptable to have a different opinion, indeed this forum welcomes it, but why so abrasive about it? You can go about this in whole different manner which would not get the reactions you are receiving and on and on and on....

I mean you actually remind me of the guy who went to the psychiatrist and said doc I'm having a hard time making friends you f****** a******.

I'm sorry that lasonic didn't build their boomboxes to your specifications but it seems like you go out of your way to stir up trouble and when it happens you either go away or stir up more trouble.

I’ve got a strange feeling that the threadstarter is an unpopular 15 or 16 year old by the style of the writing and the bicycle with the speakers attached in the avatar.
Mods should seriously consider imposing a minimum age limit to people joining this site.

The Lasonic on the beach looks photoshopped

So there was no such thing as buying a second hand Boombox in the early 90s?
You could if you can find one for sale or knew somebody who was selling one or happened upon it by accident the value of these in the beginning of the 90s was very low because of all the new technology coming out.

I should know I traded my Helix Wheely for a sub box at the pawn shop.

seems to ME like Y'ALL are the ones seriously in need of prozac... talking about ME personally.

as to being a boombox enthusiast, i'm one too, but not for the same reasons as you. boomboxes are "religious symbols" to me, as well as tools for expression... POSITIVE expression. THAT is why i lament the loss of hip-hop. the world is what it is now in part because it was snuffed by the white devil & replaced with gangsta crap. i WON'T let it go. i never surrender. it just makes me dig my heels in harder fighting for upbeat dance music. that's why i have the bike trailer system.

here's the thing... given a CHOICE... many people like upbeat & funky music. i got more than one female dancing, even one busty MILF freakin' on my leg to my sonic impact/discman/mission bookshelf saddlebag system in a town where all the effiminate poseurs PRETENDED they were gangsta but would crap their pants living in ANY of the hoods i've lived in. it even drove many of 'em crazy with rage seeing me getting more action than them playing tunes that WOMEN like.

anyways... to all those talking about ME personally (i don't give a crap about hating on my duck rock tribute)

Look nobody hates you but in prison you might last 5 minutes . when you are in Rome you do as the romans do.
I mean we're basically here for Boombox is not a music history lesson.
What the f*** is it take to understand that some things you have to slide into slowly you don't come in barking like a mad dog cuz you know what the f*** happened to Mad Dogs all you got to do is just say what you got to say nobody's going to judge you come at them more respectable like.
