My Collection

Hello everyone. Decided after yesterday's find I should quit lurking and start posting now that I have a collection to show again (ie more than two boomboxes). There are a couple I used to have that I shouldn't have sold that should be in this topic as well, but I just had to get rid of them and now I have to go find them again in a remote corner of Saskatchewan where these aren't that easy to come by.

Here's what's in the collection currently. First, the very first... a Pulser CC4000 my mother bought me brand new in 1985 as my first. I'd wanted one with a TV but Canadian Tire was sold out. This was the second choice - IIRC it cost just under $120 Canadian. I've kept it fully working, having been an electronics tech since I was 14. That metal "private" sticker up top is covering the hole where the button for dial illumination used to be - a modification I made once when I was sick of not being able to see the radio dial. That mod didn't work out very well... the lamps lit up the whole top panel of the thing. The other mod I did was to replace the red power LED with a green one... I wanted it to be a different color than the red FM stereo indicator next to it.

This was especially irritating to use as a portable. The handle only locks down the speakers when it's in the up position. You put the handle even partway down, and the speakers love to fall off. I think I tried once and once only to put it on my shoulder. Other than that, it's been a great unit. I did a lot of recording off the radio when I was a kid, and the tape deck has quite decent sound quality.

Next stop - a Sanyo M7770K. I found this at a thrift store for $8. Had the fine tuning knob missing, part of the case broken, and a broken antenna. The tape deck is a little flaky, but works well enough that I didn't feel like fixing it. The rest of it is working fine. This gets used during long power failures for the shortwave abilities, and for the fact that batteries last forever in it. It now has a six foot long antenna - helps the shortwave reception a bit.

And now, the one I found yesterday. I work at a church part time, which means I get to see rummage sale items before the public does. There were two boomboxes there this week. One was a Fisher CD model - never liked them much so I left it. I'm picky when it comes to my collection - it has to have something cool about it or some personal significance. But the other one? Jackpot. Here's a Pioneer SK-650. Five bucks. Came with its original owner's manual. I still need to clean this up and go over it... it does have some issues. It's mostly working with a slow tape deck and controls that need cleaning, but that's easy stuff.

And that's it - my collection. Hopefully this will be getting bigger instead of smaller now. The two that couldn't make it are the Panasonic RX-DS20 I bought new back in 1990 and sold a couple years ago still working fine, and an unknown Sanyo one piece that started breaking plastic parts a while back and ended up getting tossed out. Nothing I could do for that one.

There aren't too many units I'm intentionally looking for, but the Panasonic RX-DS30 is on that list, along with several cool models I remember seeing back in the 80's. I'll keep looking.

An excellent inaugural post! Welcome aboard, Wolf! Even with all the faults you listed for the Sanyo, it is still a beautiful mini - especially in red.

That it is... I think I like them a little better in black, but the red is quite nice. I was just pleased it wasn't all beat up when I found it, with the exception of the broken part of the case. I should get on the tape deck one of these days and fully restore it. It plays properly, and the music search works, but it won't rewind. The belt's probably a bit stretchy. Finding the fine tuning knob would be nice, too. Shortwave tuning is a pain without it.

All excellent boxes but I fancy that Pioneer a bit.

I think I agree with you. The CC4000 was a compromise... the Pioneer is closer to what I would have really wanted. Probably cost a fair bit new. I was giddy with excitement when I spotted it at the church next to the Fisher... I just had to have it.

There are still quite a few Panasonic models from the 80's I would give my right arm to have, including a big detachable speaker model with 3 way speakers, full logic tape controls, and LED VU meters. Last time I saw one in person was when it retailed for $300+ in 1980-something. Never saw one again even in pictures until I started lurking around here. That reminds me - I need to go and ask what model that beast is so I know what to Google for

Edit - a case of misidentification. What I thought was a picture of my Panasonic holy grail was actually a JVC. Nuts.

The Pioneer is at 100% now functionally. I'll have pics once I get it back together and cleaned up. The tape section needs new belts, but I got by for now just cleaning them up and turning them inside out. Plays at proper speed now and all related functions work.

The tape buttons on this unit need work yet. There are little plastic spacers on the ends of the plungers, and several on mine have broken off. I found one of the springs lying on the bottom of the case. Two have already been replaced in the past with screws and nuts. The two broken ones I've epoxied back together. Just waiting on them to cure so I can get the unit put back together.

Edit - and here's the cleaned up Pioneer:

Thanks - I'm liking what's in your avatar as well :)

I need to get back into the Pioneer apparently. It's randomly firing up with a too quiet right channel. I knew I should have gone over the solder joints while I had it apart. Tape deck's working fine though - my epoxied button plungers are holding. Sound quality is pretty good for a pair of whizzer equipped 4 1/2 inchers from the 80's. Wait a sec - did I remember to clean the headphone jack? I bet I forgot.

Did a search on the boards for the CC4000 last night... didn't realize it was so rare, though now that I think of it I've never seen another one since the day I got mine. That goes for the other non Pulser variants as well. I suppose that means I'll probably never find a parts box with an intact tape counter reset button. What a workhorse that box has been... 25 years and counting, still used semi-regularly. I just have to stick a jeweler's screwdriver up into the counter to reset it

Thanks :)

The Pioneer developed more issues - it now thinks there's a tape in there that needs playing at all times. No getting around it, I need to put the tech hat back on and get back in there. My epoxy might have given way on the stop button plunger, or a reed switch may have broken or moved out of place, or something else. It's one of the more complicated decks I've worked on, but I'll get it tamed one of these days.

Added one to the collection over the weekend - my first Toshiba, an RT-7066. Were it not for the digital tuner and the good cosmetic condition, it might have stayed where I found it. But, for $13 I decided it was coming home with me.

It does have issues - the left channel only buzzes. But if I got the Pioneer going again, I think I can handle this one.

There's a Clairtone 7970 detachable speaker unit I might try to get my paws on soon. Belongs to a family member but she hasn't used it in years. It's covered in grime, but should clean up pretty well. I'm on the fence about it - there are Clairtones I really want, but this isn't one of them.

Edit - the Tosh is fully working now. Recapped around the amp chip and touched up a few solder joints.

It seems that my meeting the Toshiba was ordained in the stars long ago. I was going through my box holding my old audio brochure collection, and discovered I had one featuring the very box I bought on Friday :-O

And that's not all. Something else in that brochure is going right on my shopping list:

The one on the left. I gotta have that one. I remember wanting it back in the day, but had forgotten all about it.

There's lots more to my brochure collection than this, including quite a few Hitachi 3D brochures. If there's any interest, I'll post them all in a new thread as I have time to run the scanner.
