Finally got a JVC PC 550 (black) and soon after I come across another one on craigslist (silver)! These are heavy hitter boxes with massive sound! Most sophisticated cassette controls I've seen on any box, and it's a smooth system to boot. Although this box can be improved with better speakers - the woofer mainly. Soon as I come across another set of the same Mission speakers I have on the Victor WR300 I'm swapping them out.
Speaking of Mission speakers (model MS-50), the best sound out of any of these boxes is with the Mission speakers. I've talked about them here before, so has Ira, but man these little guys can move some air. If you can find them under $50 you have yourself a bargain! The other JVC 3pc box, R300JW, is upgraded with a pair of JVC speakers I pulled out of some bookshelf home speakers. Much improved sound from this box also.
