I am curious- No one started any thread on the recent Marantz PMS-6000 that sold for $1125. I know the fellow that bought it, and he was happy with it, despite it having frozen VU meters.. Whaddayall think of this model? It *was* a pretty thing!

Hey mate,

I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere in a thread but cant remember where. There were mixed feelings on the price. Some felt it was worth it some thought it was too much. I dont think anyone thought it was a bargain tho..............

Chris,

It was discussed already. I personally loved that machine and bid but nowhere near what it would've taken to win it. Not that I didn't think it was worth it. More like that was more money than I could beg, borrow or steal for.

Anyhow, the frozen meter syndrome seems very common to Marantz -- don't know why. If the meter motors are not blown, they can be freed up by simply adjusting the setscrew in the front of the armature.

I wonder if your friend might be willing to "lend" me his cassette head cover so I can make a mold from it? :hmmm:

I will ask him about that- he is a very amiable person. I will be seeing him in a month at the Kutztown radio swap meet. I think the meters got pegged and overheated due to the ever popular dirty rec/PB slide switch inside that causes oscillations making the meters go wild.

It's possible that oscillations going wild and pegging the meters can happen but people wouldn't normally play their gear in that condition. Certainly not for any sustained period of time since the squeal is quite annoying. I'm just saying that I have seen many Marantz's including the PMS-7000 that the meters seem to be frozen when I received them but such was not disclosed by the sellers. Merely adjusting the backlash adjustment freed up the needle and they worked again. Could be shipping jars/shocks can cause the armature shaft to wedge/jam against that setscrew. However, I have also seen the same meter in another PMS7000 that was blown (no continuity). Anyhow, it's worth a try to adjust that setscrew since there is nothing to lose. Unfortunately, the Marantz meters are fairly unique and finding a suitable replacement is not going to be easy.

As for that tape head cover -- mine is missing that cover and this boombox is sooooo rare it isn't even funny. We have some folks here that have molded replacement parts that look and work exactly like original. While that cover is made of metal, I would settle for a plastic one cast from a mold and painted metal color -- far better than nothing.

Dude- Go to the ARRL Hamfest site (just google that) and go to ANY Hamfest. I have NEVER come home without at least one boomer from one of those, and as a rule, hams do not like them much- even better!
