I was listening to my M90 recently and all of a sudden the treble went flat on one side. The left tweeter wasn't producing any sound and I feared I had a major problem on my hands. I called Norm and he gave me a simple technique to test all the speakers individually to isolate the problem. Lucky for me the problem was a blown tweeter.

I ordered a new set of 2 3/4" Sony tweeters from Parts Express. The originals were 6 ohm 20 watt max. The replacements are 8 ohm 70 watt max. The shape and design of the Sony tweeters are an exact match for the JVC tweets, so they fit perfectly. My concern was how would the sound be affected? Looking at the front side the paper used for the Sony tweeter looks and feels much more solid than the JVC's so I was hoping that quality would mean better sound.

I went over to Norms for some quick surgery and before you could say "M90" he had the new tweeters installed. We installed the chassis and fired her up. I was pleasantly surprised and kind of shocked that these Sony tweets sound better, have more detail, and deliver the sound more smoothly. I never thought I could make the M90 sound better but these tweeters make a big difference in the mid to upper range sound reproduction.

There is a small downside...these tweets have gloss black centers so they are hard to see through the tweeter grill. Other than that the rest is all upside!! The M90 sounded great before but now the detail is truly fantastic. I would recommend these tweeters to anyone looking to replace or upgrade there M90 tweeters. Here are some pics of the tweets and the finished product...

I'm sure you could put some kind of color on those new cones  . Good to know about the new part info, thanks.

That's cool! In some ways, I kinda like the stealth tweeter look.

You know, out of all of the boxes I currently have, the M90 is the only box I haven't opened, mainly because it's the best sounding box I have
and I'm scared I'll ruin something just from unscrewing the back case. :-D

Great to finally see what the inside looks like.

I like the look, but improving on the sound...MAN..that's the special part.

Nice work, and they fit nice too so it would be easy to make original again anyway.

Tweeters look great. No need to color or chrome them. Gives the boombox an "I'm going to kick your a." look.

I bet that radio sounds crisp now. As time marches on, products improve and I bet the specs on the new tweeters exceed the original 30 year old design. Highs are so important. Everyone is always talking "Bass, Bass, Bass". But without clean highs, how would your ears ever ring! :-P  :-D

Nice Mod!

I ran into the same issue, after doing some reading, those dustcaps can be removed with an exacto knife and you could transplant mylar domes in thier place. Another idea would be to simply find slightly larger ones from some donor speakers and glue them on top of the black caps. Glad the sound improved for you, a lot of these boombox speakers are matched to the amp and structure of the box itself to maximize sound output and quality, which makes replacing speakers tougher because the sonic results could vary. I ran into this when I replaced a set of speakers in one of my smaller Panasonics (5200) that i cannibalized from another Panasonic and the sound was terrible, so I went back to the old speakers. The caps in the 5200 are glossy black, and since it is the plastic "drilled" style speaker opening, it's hard to see the speakers at all so i opted for a pair of same size and rating with mylar caps.
