My daughter is going college. She is an audiophile (vinyl and plays bass) but I want to send her with a 80s era boombox (represent). Here are the criteria - Mid (Panasonic RX-5500) to small size. Could be a one piece or compo. Great sound. Looks good. Decent casette. Phono and or aux in. "Reasonable" to find used in good shape and not irreplaceable if stolen (USA). Cost is not a huge factor. This is an heirloom piece but again could go walking if it is too tempting. LEDs a plus (my bias). She's using rc-656 right now.

What would be your top 1-3 choices?

Go!

A few months have passed so not sure if you’re still looking? If you are, why not an RX-5500? I own two (one just for parts to replace a few non- original parts on the first). They’re not too hard to find, especially because they were made under three names: National, National Panasonic, and Panasonic. And a few diff. model numbers— Panasonic RX-5500 I guess is the “flagship”, main model, but also RX-5500F, RX-5500FA, and RX-5500LS. Some have the bonus (for Americans, used to just AM and FM) of two shortwave bands to boot. Just be aware that the National models— which I believe were made esp for Japanese market— have FM dials that don’t “line up” on our FM frequency spectrum (ie they don’t range from 88 to 108).... so as I understand it, you’d get only some of the stations. (There’s digital workarounds, but a kid might not want to mess with all that— I know I didn’t). But the two made-for-Europe RX-5500F’s I have have totally normal FM and AM bands (plus two shortwave bands)! They can be had fully reconditioned as cheap as around $300-400 if you look...don’t be thrown off that so many are ridiculously trying to get $700, 800, 900+ for them. And another thing I love about them— in addition to their sturdiness and clear sound— is the two sets of RCA input jacks on the side—- you can plug in an oldschool turntable -or- an iPhone or iPad, courtesy of the “line-in/phono” switch, too! So, with that you can stream ITunes or Spotify, if you want.

(good luck with the going-to-college in the fall daughter, I’ve got one of those too!)

Hitachi 3D80/88.
Great sound (although mine doesn't boom as much as my other two) LEDs, AUX in, can be had as low as $50 if you look around on ebay and Canadian sites like kijiji.
