Hi,,
Recently i had a chance to acquire Nak600 vintage deck, my main usage will be recording live music out of the microphone for small music band, I have been using Akai, Aiwa and zoom H6 as well and used to hook the microphones direct to the recorder and set the gain with extra tweaks, Now with this deck the line in from the mics is very low almost not usable to record, I though it is due to some adaptors i use to hook my 1/4 (6.3mm) mics, but lately I figured that for some how it needs a power from middle device ( Amp, peramp or mixer) the only thing i have now is a akai am-2400, with several trials i managed to get a good lever or normal out of the phono from the amp. But its dull and very dark.
The question here is what would be the ideal setup to get the levels up with any quality degradation? And what would be plane B if any as an alternative solution, can i find a mics thar could send some power to level up the deck ?
Regards

You want something like a mixer with EQ with low noise. Should be able to pickup a DJ mixer cheaply these are good as they use Low voltage AC supply.

Mics can have many different outputs some desks have low input, it's a hole can of worms.

What you need is a mixer or mixing board. These have Mic mixing. Capabilities .These will allow you to adjust the gains on the inputs and outputs separately. Another option is in equalizer which will allow you to boost the signal or cut the signal pretty much the way you want it.

Well today i was in the market for having general idea about local and quick solution, I came across a very advanced mixer intended for digital media and recorder as well ( Zoom L8 ) and (Zoom p8) they are pretty powerful loaded with many features however I couldn’t understand how to assign certain inputs ( mics) to right or left output channel it seems the mix you do on live will be equally applied to both output channels,, after looking to many reviews on youtube I THINK L8 can do that but its a bit complicated at least to me. Oh ya and the price is almost same as the Nakamichi 610 preamp.
I like what am doing with tape recording due to simplicity and yet satisfied with the quality getting out of it, I feel going with that mixer will need another learning curve with trials and errors ☺️ .

Actually the preamp is a good idea .
I have a nice adcom pre amp I've been hoarding away.
