line in through mic mix!!

Hi all, iv'e recently acquired a crown sz 5100 which as you may know does'nt house a line in function
iv'e just seen on a thread that Viennasound put up of his crown a post by member NZ BOOM saying line in can be used through the mic mixing feature??
can anybody help me out here as the crown is my only box now and would love to have a line in source on it without any conversion needing.

Now then Az! Glad you've kept one, surprised its not the D8614 tho!

I've used the mic mixing facility on my Sharp GF9191 and 9494...switch the selector to phono for example (just so its on but theres no other actual sound input) then stick a 3.5mm jack in, switch the mic mixing switch to on and turn the mixing dial up...need to adjust the volume level on the mp3 player and the mixing dial to the right levels otherwise it distorts if too high but once you've twiddled that it works just like a proper line in!

Not sure of the specifics for the crown but its likely a similar scenario.

I don't actually use the mic mixing socket any more tho...I use the phono sockets and a phono attenuator as it works better...you don't have to fiddle with levels

btw i only sold the 8614 as Ed loved the sound way over the crown, i should'nt have let him hear it lol, only kiddin Ed i will defo be looking out for another in the future once again thanks for the input on the mix mic

Hey Az, ive got the Unisef version and im sure i tried the mike mixing socket for line in but seem to remember that while it worked it didnt sound good. It may be my box though

I'll dig the Uni out at the weekend and give it another try

hey nice one on the uni MJ, i was kind of thinking that may be the case tbh but il'e get a jack lead and give it a whirl anyway

this is what I do to use an ipod on my sharp gf 9696 and 9494....the only thing is the need to back the volume control on the i pod down.. then i adjust the mic mixing level t find a good balanced sound very easy to have distortion using this input method but once you get the sweet spot it works great

mine sounds good through the mixing mic but it is mono. plus i put real tweeters in mine and make shore your eq is working mine sounded like crap until i cleaned the eq sliders

That Crown looks great! Looks like it even has the plastic protection overlays from the factory, too!! Nice...

This is the easy way to connect a mp3 player to boombox.
I tested with 3-4 players on 3 different boomboxes.
This connection has only one "-" the sound is mono.
Here is some steps for best result:
1. EQ on mp3 player must be FLAT or OFF.
2. Volume on mp3 player must be in the middle - 50%.
3. Volume on mic mix must be in the middle - 50%.
4. Connect mp3 player to mic mix jack with cable.
5. Listen your favorite songs!!!

hey guys thanks a million for all your reply's it's much appreciated i'm getting mixed opinions but i think i will pick up the jack lead today or tomorrow and give it a go. once again thanks for all the input

The issue is the mic input will generally have a pre to boost the signal from the mic, this is what creates the distortion if the source volume is to high. I would rather run a cassette adapter or iTrip myself.

well guys i am one happy chappy today i picked up the 3.5mm jack and hooked it upo thru the mic mix and........i get proper line in sound i was well shocked it sounded so good and it goes extremely loud, the crown can kick no question. all i needed to do was lower the volume on my phone and the mic mix vol and i got excellent results. another thing i noticed was the led's lit up all the way using this method thanks guys for all the input it would'nt have been possible without y'all,
