I have several European boxes with permanently lit tuners. And they also have a light button, that EXTINGUISHES the light. And it's the "press and hold" kind of button, that needs to be held down.

Why would someone want to extinguish the light for a few seconds?

Examples: Sencor S5000, Saba RCR415, Universum 8800, Universum CTR2306

Are you sure the tuners are lit when on batteries? Many boomboxes have lit tuners when in AC but not on DC in which case you need to press button.

You're right, I almost never use batteries. Interesting! Makes me wonder why all boxes weren't wired that way. Sanyo M9994 for example....why didn't they make the light permanent on AC?

The light button supplies DC to the bulb. Since your box is not being supplied with DC, depressing that button switches out AC to the not-active DC, ergo, no light.

To have the always on AC light setup, many boxes such as M-9980, M-9998 has a dual AC supply. In other words, the transformer has a separate winding for the bulb. This costs more and makes the circuitry more complicated. It might be simply a cost issue.

However the M9994 is a top of the heap type of box but being marketed as a professional line as opposed to the M9998 which was marketed to home users leads me to think that the M9994 was intended for more portable use than the others, and it's very flexible input control suggests that recording features was an important focal point for that model.

I always had the same opinion.
Wish though that all my boxes had permanently lit tuners, it would have made them look much more interesting
and cozy, especially in the dark. Like Tosh RT-S90.
