We are shooting a pilot about the start of hip hop. I'm looking for photo references of boomboxes from the late 1980's to 1990. If the photo has a specific date, that helps with the verification process.

Does anyone have photos or good websites I can reference? Any help is welcome!

This seems contradictory to me.

But I'm sure there are plenty people who can help you, though most people here collect late-70s - early/mid 80s boomboxes. I myself have none from after 1986, so I can't really help. For just popular models in the US in the 80s I'd go with Lasonic 931/975, Sharp GF-777, Crown 850, perhaps JVC-M70 and M90. and Conion C-100.

Yeah man, hip hop's true roots were in the 70's.

The late 80's? That isn't the dawn of hip hop, that's the dawn of gangsta rap. And most of those boomboxes were either boring eggs or 3-piece shelf systems. Don't get me wrong, some of them sounded great, but they aren't what I'd want to shoot for a video.

Pretty sure hip hop all started in 1989 when Vanilla Ice dropped Ice Ice Baby. There was no hip hop before that. I could be wrong but I don't think I am.

Close but no cigar. It was 1993 with: Snow by Informer.

It doesn't even sound like he's shooting something comparatively simple like a video. He says he's shooting a PILOT for crying out loud. You would think a potential SERIES would have done a little research. He must have misspoke. :hmmm: Either that or he's had his ears full of NWA 'cause of that new film 'Boys In The Hood' that's coming out... ;-)

I had a few issues to start with. If you PM Reli or Superduper they will be able to help you :-)

Yup the dates here seem out of wack with the photos you are asking about. Hip Hop in its intfancy started in the early 70's, to start with its was about block parties and local DJ's with their decks and large sound systems. Boomboxes came a little later as the culture developed and they became an integral part of it. Whether for sharing a tape or throwing down some moves with a box pumping in the background, late seventies saw the boombox play a big part in hipo hop. This is the era you surely want to be thinking about and collecting pictures from.

Just to confirm - its not about the start of hip hop. The pilot is about 3 friends, united by their love of hip hop, working to make their big mark on the music industry. So, I'm doing research to find props (like boomboxes, walkman, discman etc...) that were around in 1988-1990.
