This past weekend I purchased a 922 from excellent member Kraftmatic. He brought this radio to the West Coat meet a few weeks back and it was so clean. I asked him and he said he would be interested in parting with it, so this past weekend at the Beat Swap in Chinatown we sealed the deal.

This thing is SUPER CLEAN and fulling working, cassette and all. It has a little scratchiness in the volume and balance and the green LED "Power" lights need to be sorted, but other than that, it is SWEET.

These came in multipal versions. One has the tweeters in the circular grill's (below) and the other has square grills with the tweeters in the top outside corners very reminiscent of the Sharp GF-9494.

But this one is my fav of the two. All the chrome, and clean symmetry is just candy to my eyes.

Here are some pictures to make you drool.

So nice! I had one but it was a goner. Had to sell parts off it. Still have parts here for it.

I love the look of those... Was tempted to buy one last year... but I was already in trouble for one of the others, haha.

How would you compare sound to the 920?

Wow, nice box!! The 5 band equaliser must make tailoring the sound a breeze.

Congrats,

James.... :-)
Yeah, EQ's are great and I have found on this radio, you can MAX out the bass and crank it with little or no distortion. It also has a Loudness button which makes a big difference.

The 920 is a stand alone in the Lasonic line. So I can't compare the two.

But I would compare the 922 to the 918. It has the same size long travel 5.5 inch woofers that really dance when you push them. The bass goes low with a subtle THUMP. I think the 918 is the best bargain in the lineup. They get loud and have great bass. Night before last, was making some dinner, had some Run DMC crankin' and it sounded amazing. Full of bass, really loud! Love it!

One of the nicest looking boxes ever made, it's a real beauty Chris and I am real envious :-D
Sometimes they just hit the make on design. I think this was one of them.

 What do you mean there?

And are those horn tweeters real, or just decoration?

I tried my hardest not to look.. Too late! I looked then I drooled. Not enough to refloat the Titanic but I did drool all the same.
Before now, I hadn't drooled since the incident with the naked sunbather, the wild dog and the ice cream back in '87. :angelic:

I haven't opened the 922 up yet, but I would assume they are for decoration. I don't see what it would need 4 tweeters for. The horns on the 935 / 951 / 975 are all fake. I'll report back on this later.

As for the 920, it's just a different set up. No EQ, no loudness button. It has more powerful bass at higher volumes. The 922 and 918 have tight bass, where the 920 has more booming bass.

IMHO, I think the 918 is the best value of the three, if you're just considering money. You can get the 918's for around $100 and they THUMP. I think the 920 is the closest thing there is to an M70 of ANY radio when it comes to sheer power and volume, but certainly not cleanliness. And I think the 922 fits nicely between the 920 and 918 (even though it followed the the 920)

I'm really happy with the 922. I think it's going to get a ton of use.

Thanks for the review! How strong are the tweeter brackets? They look kind of exposed. Better be careful, lol!

The tweeter bracket is a part of the woofer surround. It's all one piece and doesn't really stick out. The tweeter is actually behind the woofer grill an either mounted to the grill or sandwiches the grill if it attaches to the bracket. It's actually a cool design.

Very nice, very clean. Its actually a little smaller than I thought it would be :hmmm: or maybe the 920 next to it is a little bigger :-D
I thought the 922 was the size of the 918 which is smaller than the 920. But in fact the 920 and 922 are the same size.

One thing I was surprised is how heavy the 922 is. It's a TANK like the 920. Very well built. No rattles, hits hard at high volume.

can't decide if my 918 kicks my 920's ass or not , most days the 918 just sound better , then some days the 920 makes a come back . who knows lol. 922 has a great eq as do most lasonics , the 922 has smaller tweeters .
like it or not the
920
918
922
are built better than more expensive boxes and they have great speakers and strong amp's ,quality controls and awesome looks .

Does the 918 have the best build quality? Just guessing.

Personally the 920 has kind of a thin, squeaky case, and the tuner knob feels cheap. The rest of the controls are good though.

I know how you love your high quality tuner knobs! :-D  All Lasonic's seem to have that wobbly tuner knob thing going on.

One thing I learned from member Fresh Produce (Peter) NIB 935, is these weren't creaky. They have been taken apart so many times that they are just F@#$% now. His is as tight as a C100.

The 918 is very solid. It's also smaller, so less flex in the whole thing.

The real issue with the 920 is it's a 3 piece. It's hard to work on and ad's to the creaky thing going on. But a well sorted one is still a powerhouse.

The 922 is a front and back. not a 3 piece. It's VERY solid
