I have to say, and I have owned both since new, I still love the sound of my 975 over my 931  The 975 has a much richer and deeper bass up to past half on volume. Now mind you I never go past this level as I have always been affraid of blowing amp or speakers, as with an of my stereo's....My brother blew my amp and speakers in my home fisher stereo years ago by blaring volume :-O :sadno:

yes the 3rd generation 931 has the LBS button which is a loudness button labeled that way,,,, the comparison was that even thou the 975 sounded more deeper in the bass department but my 931s were in fact a lot more louder with crispier highs,, too much bass is not always a good thing as it tends to distort at higher volume,, so yes the 975 will have the advange on the better bass but the 931 still pumps bass but has better highs and sounds alot louder

YES !!! chris -
by all $$ means --do get the newer ROUNDED CORNER version of the old square 931 -
they sound identical to the originals --and they are newer --

plus - they came on the market --after the 'street beater' days -
so -- most will be in much better condition -
and with less miles on them

I might have a gen 3 931 on the way to me  . I will compare the 920, 931, 935, 951, and the 975! :w00t:

i prefer the sound of my original issue 931 to my 975.
The 975 does have more bass with the LBS, but to my uneducated ears, the original 931 sounds cleaner and smoother.

:agree:
LBS = mud :thumbsdown:

however --
can we agree that at LOW volumes -
the 975 with the LBS on --has a real deep // sweet sound ? :-)

Yes. Excellent at low volume. But if you want to crank the 975, turn off the LBS and adjust the EQ. My 935 is louder and sounds better than my 975.

I can still say that I may be the only collector to have had both these units new and was able to do a fair test which I did and that's why I upgraded to the 975 in 1993.... I can also say I did not beat on them or blare them to the max like others. So the music has bigger cleaner bass and sounds tighter than the 931 hands down. Again a big problem could be needing new caps on the 975 you guys own that have had lots of use :-D

Also might be worth considering hardware variations having different sound too.
We know Lasonic used lots of different parts from different manufacturers over the production
runs of their radios and there's a possiblity some versions have markedly different sound
personalities. Especially over time with some components possibly aging slower or more
rapidly than others.

As badboybill says, the use they've endured or not endured will be a large factor too!

Just an idea anyway.

Rock On.

:agree: with rick --
lasonic may have made no definitive standard 'reference' boxes -
within each model number --
so --then --it may always be impossible to compare their outputs
