Keeping batteries in boombox?

As batteries deplete, a chemical reaction occurs internally which causes them to expand and leak. When you leave batteries inside a Boombox for a long time, it’s a good chance that you won’t remember or keep track of it’s charge level. So once it’s remaining charge drops below a certain level, leaking is virtually assured and the battery contacts will probably get destroyed by the leaking acid.

A few weeks ago I received a granddady of bboxes, Superscope CRS-152. look what I pulled out of it (note the expiration date):

Dead but in one piece! Acid fumed rusted springs a bit, but LCR cleaned them up nicely. On the other hand, Duracell AA//AAA batteries tend to leak acid into my remotes in less than a year! Take a look:

Exp.2008 - still OK; bought last year - already leaked!!! All "made in USA" but those which leaked also have some Chinese characters :hmmm:

I found a really good Pioneer SK-909 earlier this Spring but the batteries must of been there from the 90s. Couldn’t see a date on them. They had leaked so badly I had to put gloves on and chisel them out almost. They were bulging out the plastic.

That is Horrible!!!

We have a very lengthy and informative thread here about rechargeables. Once these AAAs ruined my expensive-looking remote for Wadia, I am now going to follow the advice and switch to rechargeable batts

The leakage is more guaranteed when the batteries are in series and/or mixed with other battery types. The very nature of a standard non rechargeable battery and how it operates internally is exactly what Norm said. It builds pressure upon depletion of the battery chemistry and causes the seals to fail and whalla.

If I use it regularly I’ll keep em in for 8 years s if they are new to begin with. Otherwise take them out if not going to be used more than a few times a year. Not worth the ness.
Also don’t forget to take your clock batteries and back up batteries from your digital or boomboxes with clocks!
