Hi
I just got this today off facebook
everything works on it but sometimes when you press the sound button it will switch to tape so maybe it needs to be cleaned?
also it has wireless Mp3 not sure what that means maybe they have an mp3 player that went with it.

i also have the RV-NB1 the black & grey one plays mp3 disc i think they are almost the same. the tape deck & the backup memory don't work either not sure why maybe a fuse for the battery backup? it had a blown main fuse when i got it a few yrs ago off of ebay but i didnt check the other fuses when i was in there i don't think.

not sure if there's any other boomboxes that sound as good as the kaboom models maybe the new sharp one does? or maybe some of the old sony fh's i would like to find a sony FH 215
i remember seeing the very first kaboom at Sam's Club in the late 90's it was expensive but i couldn't believe how good the sound was

The Kabooms definitely have good bass, but the sound is not well rounded. This should come as no suprise because you have the subwoofers, very substantial dual system at that, and everything else, all the rest of the sound is produced by a couple of tiny drivers that's 1/2 way between a midrange and tweeter size. They actually sound like poor tweeters if you remove them from the basket. A decade ago, I did a mod on an NB1 by adding tweeters. That improved the sound a lot. You can search here for racoon kaboom for a glimpse at the project.

As for the Sony FH series, not only do they sound better and more well rounded, they are far more powerful than the kaboom. Much better midrange, much better treble, and decent solid bass, but doesn't go nearly as low as the kaboom which again, is not surprising since the FH series do not have subwoofers. They sound more like a typical home system with bookshelf speakers from the '70's. I'm talking about the FH-3/5/7. Later ones such as the FH-215 you speak of do have improved bass compared to the earlier FH series but the cabinets have become more cheaply made, wood fiber board backs as opposed to steel.

What The wireless mp3 is after looking in the manual the unit was sold with an fm transmitter that you would hook to your mp3 player to. So I don't think it's really needed probably was made before bluetooth was popular.

I always wondered why they used such small drivers for the mids and highs. I think some songs sound better then others and it depends where you place it at. I've seen a few yrs ago where someone added bass and Treble controls on the boombox not sure how hard that would be to do. The present eq settings dont seem to do a whole lot. I usually leave it on beat and the ACS on I think it gives it a little more highs.

Super,
Did you ever sell this kit on Analog Alley? I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Hey Eric, are you “still” looking for that kit?
Listen I’ve moved and have most of my stuff in storage still. I thought I’d have everything sorted by now but instead of going through the huge task of unboxing and organizing everything, I’d since found it easier to just get everything new and live a new life. Talk about time passing quick, that was a decade ago. I know I have it somewhere in storage, next time I go back to the warehouse, I’ll make a point of searching for it. I think it’s time I put that kit together since my health is going downhill fast and all that stuff might eventually go to landfill if the worse should happen.

Sorry to hear about your health Sup. Stay positive, be active, makes the days go better. Keep us posted and if you start selling the kit let me know. I like the looks and want to improve the high end.
