I have recently found a JVC RV B70 in olive green which I could pick up locally. When disassembling it for cleaning I found that the inside was grey plastic instead of green. Is it true tath these boxes are only painted or did the previous owner paint it by himself? The printing on the CD lid was still there so I assume that it was painted by JVC but still I am curious.

I did but I can't find any pictures of an open Kaboom in green. Even if there are pictures from the inside of a green box it would just be grey plastic, no way to tell if the box is green outside. I just saw that some people on here like the JVC Kabooms and have noticed the same thing.

sounds like someone painted it. i had one brand new and it was certainly wasn’t painted. plastic is moulded in the appropriate color. shouldn't be grey inside.

I'd find it hard to believe that these were molded from the factory with each piece in two different colors. Someone has to have painted it. I have a silver one but it was molded in that color. Got some pictures you can take for us now that it's in your possession?

It didn't come to my mind that I simply can look at the type label in the back. And that ends on GY which clearly states that it is / was a grey unit. That and the helpful comment by hemiguy2006 make clear it was painted. I still wonder how the guy who did that presevered the print on the cd lid.

Probably grey but a little sun damaged rather than painted. Seen others on google images that look similar. Too far fetched for me to believe that all those other people painted their kabooms the same shade of green.

Interesting, I thought maybe the green got lighter through sun damage and wouldn't have expected that grey plastic would turn green. But that would explain why the original printing on the CD lid is still there. This thing is battered, with cement, paint and whatnot spilled all over it. Seemed to have been taken to construction sites for years so it all makes sense.

When picking it up I explained that I was especially happy because it is a green unit. The seller didn't even flinch ...

Yes, comparing the pictures I can see that, too. The real olive coloured boxes have a strong green which I like alot. But pitcures and reading on the internet only tells so much. You have to touch the stuff, work on it, test it out and compare it to fully understand the differences. That's what is the most fun for me about vintage tech.

Man, that looks rough. Thing just oozes texture. Or did ooze create the texture? I wonder if partly some of the color is because of a chemical reaction to one of the myriad things that blopped onto it over the years.

The chemicals even degenerated the plastic, especially near the woofer grills. And the picture was taken after taking the box apart and scrubbing it down! After the first shock I started to appreciate the look and it still works like any other Kaboom. It is unique, only time can create such patina.
