Found a JVC PC-5 with original owner's manual, carry bag, and wired remote. Unit is in fairly good condition with some scratches on top, and the small door on the cassette deck has a broken tab.
Nice, inexpensive ($150) addition to my PC-11 and Silver ST-858.

See the woofers were replaced with whizzer cones , the original woofers were notorious for foam surround rot. Refoamed a system I had a few years back. Great sounding unit and great find!

Got the 3 deck belts replaced, adjusted azimuth and speed. May have to do another speed adjustment, runs pretty constant, then drops ~25hHz with quick recovery. W/F not awful at 0.08-0.12. Hoping the speed 'dropouts' improve with some run time; wish this had an auto-repeat function.

The only belt I did not replace is the tuning flywheel. Not going to mess with the dial string unless I absolutely have to.

Azimuth was a tad out using an 8kHz tape; may be close to the limit on these heads, 10kHz gave a much wider lissajous curve, didn't bother with the 15kHz tape. I may break out the Nakamichi T-100, see how bad the frequency response is. Probably not worth looking at anything beyond that, I assume most adjustments I have on my Nak decks are likely fixed on the JVC. I won't bother measuring anything on the record head, this will be used for playback only.

Overall, the sound is pretty good. Seems like this is a much nicer unit than the PC-11; certainly better features, and more thought went into the engineering; i.e. separate phono & aux inputs, loudness control, the multi-position speaker mounts for use as a complete boombox, or as a standalone portable cassette deck. Overall a very nice unit!

Put a drop of machine oil on the motor shaft to try and lubricate the bearing, they are often bone dry and it affects the speed and causes fluctuations. Alternatively, it’s a simple job to replace it altogether.

Thanks! I put a drop or so on the motor shaft, will run it a few hours tonight. I also found what looked like some fine thread (maybe a dust bunny) trapped in the take up axle, next to the idler assy. Removed that as well. Didn't look like it was binding that axle at all, but it is possible.

Capstan motor is shot. Pulled it partially out; most times when it is on, it is making a good bit of noise. Oiling did not help, so a replacement is on the way. Hard to find either the motor specified in the SM, or the original installed motor (dated 1981).
