JVC PC-11: Is this a good price?

Hello fellow Boomboxers,

I found a JVC PC-11 with manual for $75. I've attached the one photo, and the caption says that it works well. I think this model looks sweet and I've read some success stories about switching the speakers.

Is this a good deal? How good of a price is it? If I meet this guy to potentially buy it, are there any details I should beware of that would make it less worth it?

$75 is a stretch for me and my family in the realm of leisure purchases, and I am pretty sure that my wife will be quite annoyed if I bring this home. So I figured that if this is a killer deal, the wise people of Boomboxery would let me know that this is a limb worth going out on.

Thank you, friends.

It appears to have some scratches to the right of the tweeter on the left speaker. Of course, the handle has yellowed a lot. Be sure to check all the sliders and knobs. Unless the seller knows how to replace belts, assume the tape deck doesn't currently work.

As for price... it's not the best price (FREE :-D ). It's probably a fair price if it's in good condition. The only one who can ultimately answer the price question is you. Once inspected, will you feel like spending $75?

If you like 3 piece boxes then JVC do make some great ones, I don't honestly think this is one though. That is purely personal opinion as im not partial to many 3 piecers, if you like it though then go for it.

You could easily get $100-125 on Ebay for it, if you know how to take good photos and appear trustworthy.

Thanks to each of you for the wisdom and insight. It is tempting. Thus far, my purchasing style has been snagging dirty boxes for cheap from the local Goodwill and rehabbing them for fun. Not sure I'm ready for the $75 market, even if I like the looks of the JVC PC-11 and it is a good deal. We'll see. I'm on a roller-coaster of "Should I?" or "Shouldn't I?"

The PC-11 is a very nice radio. However, it has a close "cousin", and AKA, known as the Vector VMC-100 that many feel has a better sound. They usually can be had for around the same money.

Sorry to add another hill for your rollercoaster. :-D

The Vector sure does seem to have similarities with the PC-11 but I’m just wondering if someone actually can confirm that it’s an actual aka and not just a styling copycat? To me, an aka would share internal design, perhaps interchangeable parts even.

As for a PC-11 in good cosmetic condition and available locally for $75... if that’s something you fancy, then $75 is a steal. The only other place you’ll find them would be on Ebay and shipping alone can set you back $35~$50. So if that’s something that’s on your watch list, stop hemming & hawing, just get it already. It’s not the best Boombox you can get and truth be told, even if you spend $1,000 on a unit, there will still be people who thinks a different model is better. But I can tell you this, there certainly are many models inferior to this one. Last note, this forum includes many worldwide members who’s experience & sentiment & opinions could differ, you should take that with a grain of salt.

Freddie would know. He has both and has operated on both. Unfortunately, football season has started again, and we probably won't hear from him until Christmas break.

Has anyone ever noticed the Conion V-121 is in fact a PC-11?? without Dolby & cosmetic differences?? It's easy to see immediately (Well I did!) & a look at the rear panel shows that it is in fact identical!!

Is this one worth it? Yes 100% & if you change the speakers they sound even better!! Real proper cassette deck too & easy enough to re-belt! Mine was on it's original belts & still working apart from the extra torque required to engage record mode - before the new belts though, it was still working!!

I agree, you will want to replace the drivers. They sound tinny, and do not have much bass. If you replace them you will find the box comes alive, really has a ton of rock solid sound. I installed a set of fostex 5" drivers, cost a lot but the sound is amazing. $75 is a good deal, mine was $75but is missing the front plate.

I say do it, you will enjoy it for years.
