Hi there everyone,
new to the forum and what a great place this is for info and community.

I woke up a few weeks ago and suddenly had an urge to get myself a good old skool boombox and my search began.

Requirements include VU meters, good sound and looks. Not to big (500mm)

Long story short I think I’ve settled on a JVC MC70 for both sound quality and also because they sponsored Arsenal FC in the 80s. Hah.

But I am open to other makes.

I mainly want it to use in my studio as a reference box so will be used with the aux in mainly but I’d like it to look the business and play my old tapes

Apart from the usual places I’m wondering if anyone here would be selling one or can suggest a very good alternative.

I’m UK based so ideally one in the UK would be preferable.

Any help, info or general guidance would be welcome.

Happy booming all..

Kevin

The M70 is rather easy to find and in the UK there's plenty of collectors but not everybody may have a M70 for sale. Unfortunately, as hisrudeness noticed, the site has been rather sleepy of late, so many members do not check the new posts.

You're looking for somebody who sells directly to you, because this would guarantee against ebay or local sale "surprises". It makes sense, but then we're back to square one, ie. either some UK member wakes up or it's tough to come up with an alternative solution to buying one even if it's not 100% working.

Unless... Aren't there UK members who can offer their expertise to you not by assisting but by doing the repair job for you, or at least point out to a trusted repair shop (provided that you state your location)?

Come on guys who's willing to come to KP2022's rescue? :-)

Hi RR
I’m looking to use it predominantly as a six input in the studio as an extra pair of fleshers do sound quality is important. I’d want to use the cassette as well and it needs to have VU meters obviously lol. Can’t be too big and doesn’t need to play super loud.
Any advice or suggestions welcome.

i have had hundreds of boxes over the years but can't think of anything else that fits the bill, the problem you have is due to size and wanting vu's maybe a sharp 9696 but never had one so can't speak for sound quality there...the m70 has everything and it is loud just lacks sound quality imho

i found the sound flat and boring imho

this is True Si lad but then i am not tone deaf like the rest of you lol

please bare in mind i have radios that make the m90 sound like a mono radio lol not hating on the m90 though just the daft prices

please post more Si you are missed and it is to quiet here of late lad

maybe this member could buy something like this....sounds a bit better than an m70 and looks way better just missing the vu'sView attachment 55906
I love this boombox.
The m70 has those miserable slider controls and eventually they will need to be rebuilt and that cost some money as well as finding someone to do the work. Also led meters work just as well as needle vu meters. Another option is a nice 3 piece compo box.

Great input by everybody, and yes, the Aiwa TPR 950 & 955 (or the 980) are great units. I love them more than the M70, being myself also known (although slightly less known than Sanyovar) as samAiwar ;)

Yet it's slightly beyond me why in a post entitled

JVC RC M70 wanted (*)

there are so many members willing to offer alternatives and almost none willing to offer concrete help with the M70 :dunce:

(*) the post is actually entitled JVC MC 70 wanted but I doubt that the misnomer could induce into error any seasoned member... 8-)

In his first post, he wrote "But I am open to other makes".
I've owned (and sold) both an M70 and M71.
They're very nice, solid boxes but I don't like the controls on top, am not crazy about the sliders and don't like the upside down cassette (don't ask me why).
I've owned two Sanyo M9994s but sold one for some of the same reasons as the M70.
Frankly, I only kept the other one because I think it's a great looking box (better than the M70/71).
I don't think I've ever read or heard a bad thing about the performance of the TPRs which is why I seconded RR's recommendation.
I currently own one 950 and two 955s and don't foresee myself ever selling them.

@Tinman nobody is criticizing inputs, as I said I think that the TPR Aiwas are great. I like them better than the M70 myself!

I just pointed out a matter of foreground and background. A new members clearly prefers the M70 "for both sound quality and also because (I quote) "they sponsored Arsenal FC in the 80s". But if he can't get it, he is open to alternatives.

The main point, however, is not even that. Basically, he's looking for something to buy directly from the community rather than from ebay because he doesn't trust his ability to fix issues. And he seems to always find issues with online sales. I mention this fact in my first post on this thread (he expressed such wish in another thread).

So eventually it's not so much a matter of alternatives to the M70 as a matter of buying a fully working unit from somebody based in the UK. Or, as I suggested, it's a matter of getting help in fixing a unit that he may buy online (with some issues).
