The M70W is for worldwide voltage and the JW is for Japan, and worldwide use and both can be used in the USA...but that is an educated guess...

I've wondered the same thing. Both the W and JW were sold in the US and appear to be identical. (The Japan box is a Victor with no letter suffix.) Both the W and JW are multi-voltage and multi-band. I'm inclined to say simply that the JW is a later version of the W, and there are no other differences.

The W box has a rated power use 24, 26 or 28 watts on the back (can't remember which) while the JW is 40 watts. Other than this number I don't know of any other difference.
