Gents,

I have a M70 that fast forwards and rewinds perfectly. However, when you press play on a tape, the button depresses fine, but pops up after a second or 2 and the tape doesn't move at all. Any help is appreciated.

See if the tape counter works when pressed play. If it doesn't, the auto stop is engaged. Change tge belt from the counter.

Seach for m70 auto stop on the forum for more details.

When you press play, a different clutch and idler spindle drives the takup spindle idler. That's the reason FF and rewind work. If the takeup wheel isn't spinning, it shuts the deck down because its tied to the counter. It does this to save your tape since it's likely the capstan is engaged. Which leads me to the possibility that your pause may be stuck on your mech. When you press play, don't just look at your takeup spindle. Look at the rubber pinch roller. If it's also not engaged, then Pause is engaged in the mech but the switch isn't closed to tell the auto stop circuit that it's paused so it kicks it off.

If the pinch roller is moving but the takeup spindle isnt, then that would sound to me like a failed play clutch or worn idler on the play clutch that spins the tire on the takeup spindle.

It's one of those scenarios.

The pinch roller arm is not decending onto the capstan. There is an arm blocking it. I think it's part number 83 in the service manual. I beleive you are right that this is a pause malfunction.

Any ideas how to fix it?

I would start with part 86 and 89. Ensure they are moving freely when pause is pressed. Compare your mech to my photo for proper alignment as it shows these parts. The pause part of the mech on my photo is far right. Check all springs and alignment. These decks have many moving parts so it would be hard to diagnose without seeing it, especially if someone had it apart and put it back together wrong. But it could likely be a stuck component with stiff grease, etc..
