JVC kaboom vs M70...and the winner is.....

I was washing my car in the driveway today and needed some tunes to get me motivated, but I couldn't decide which box to use so I chose 2: my JVC Kaboom and my M70. I loaded up Earth, Wind & Fire's greatest hits on the mp3 and used a splitter to connect to both radio's line input. I put the volume on both radios to about 3/4 and the sound was incredible!! Together they make the perfect box! No individual box could touch these two together in sound quality, volume, bass and clarity...but which one is better individually??? I decided to find out. The kaboom clearly outshines in the bass category hands down, but those 3 inch mids can't seem to pump out enough midrange and highs to balance out the thunderous bass. The sound is rich and deep but it feels as if your not hearing all of the music. Where the kaboom is lacking the M70 shines, the mids and highs come in so clearly that you can hear every voice and instrument in the song. The bass is crisp and clean but not thunderous. So if you are listening to music where the vocals and instruments are the focus the M70 is the clear winner. If you are listening to music where the bass is the focus(like most of todays music) and the vocals and instruments take a back seat then it's the kaboom, but the M70 is just so nice to look at and the overall volume is louder so my personal choice is the M70...but as I said earlier together they make the PERFECT bbox.

cool report --
i often use the kaboom as the background sub -
to support any box with nice clean mids and highs --

so - i agree that those 2 are an unbeatable combo

Cool review and without going through your test myselft I would agree with your conclusion. The M70 is just has to much classic cool for the Kaboom.

Sweet ride!! I love the color - and the rims aren't bad either. :-D :afro:

I can't believe I still don't have an M70 or a Kaboom. :dunce:

I don't have the big kaboom yet either bobby but I do have the baby kaboom which I think has a more even sound than the daddy kaboom. Makes me think I should do a comparison between those two. :hmmm:

Thanks for the compliment Fatdog...cars are my other hobby. If you ever get a chance to hear a kaboom with and M70 you will rush to get one. I have never heard ANY portable that can challenge the bass reproduction of the kaboom. Truly and amazing box...too bad it's sooo ugly and has no tweeters. I am currently experimenting on my extra kaboom, gonna put some 2 way 6.5 inch alpine's where the woofer go to see if I can get some help with those highs....will let you know how it turns out...

Those 3 inch drivers are like the size of tweeters anyhow which is probably why tweeters weren't implemented. As for putting coaxials into where the woofers are, I don't think you'll see any improvements there except maybe a drop in the bass output. Unlike low frequencies which are omnidirectional (doesn't matter which way you point it) high frequencies are highly directional and having tweeters point out to the side will result in very little of the highs getting to your ears at all unless you are sitting on the side and have the bazooka end pointed straight at you, but then you'll lose the rest of the full range audio which is pointed 90 degrees the other direction. Of course there is no stereo effect to speak of when you are sitting off to one side. A better result could probably be attained by replacing the full range drivers up front with high quality (mid-tweeters). Finding ones with enough sensitivity and low impedance (4 ohms) will probably be the hard part.

yes the newer kaboom were shy on the mid and treble department but the dp model has regular bass mid and treble adjustments and the newer kaboom has the fixed rock jazz classic equalizer adjustments, so the dp sounds a lot better in sound
