John Peel is a legend and sorely missed, Like Si said, used to listen to a lot of late night Peel. The 550 is awesome, I would love to get one, one day.

Ow, just googled him. He did do UK Top of the Pops as well in the eighties! I watched that often! Must have seen him for sure! :) Kind of Adam Curry, he was doing the same thing here, until he went to US for MTV.

What year do think this pic was taken? what I mean is I wonder how old that 550 was at the time the pic was taken.

As there is a bmx and what look like Tonka toys im guessing around 1982 and the 550 was about 3 years old??

According to the link it has 1986 as part of the keywords. Man that JVC looks massive! Do they sound as big as they look? I'm sure I saw somewhere that they are rated as 7watts! Great photo.

7 watts is more than plenty into a 92db/W/1m speaker. JVC weren't given to exaggerating their boxes' outputs with meaningless measurements like "Music power" and "PMPO" so those will be 7 root watts or, in the language of some makers; 200,000,000W PMPO. (Maybe that's a little too OTT, maybe it's Binatone-speak?)

Tom Ravenscroft (John's son) - himself now a presenter on BBC6 - was born on February the 6th, 1980, he hasn't changed that much since then, look at his current profile pic and guess which is him in the family photo! John must have left the family well catered for, look at the teeth Tom was able to afford:
