When i was surfing the World Wide Web last week i found myself a MARC ghettoblaster for sale on an auction site. I was very surprised to find it and it was identical to the UNIMEX box that i had bougth when i was only 11 years old and is still in the family up till today.
Up till now i have never seen this box anywhere on the net so i bought it at once. When i received it the box was not working and was in a terrible state.
The antenna was completely gone and the radio was very dirty inside and outside. The handle was also broken, the frequency plate was bend and everywhere was a thick layer of dust and who knows what else?..
With a litte WD40 sprayed between the on/off button i suddenly managed to get some noise out of it. My wife and i cleaned the outside a bit and then i started to unscrew the back case. At first i couldnt get i loose but after a few minutes i found out that the case was also beiing held by the knobs at the front side.
When it was finally open i first found about 35 years of dust and the remains of some exotic? insects.
Then i put in a new antenne, not exactly the same and it needed some drilling but it worked out fine. Then i repaired the bent frequency display and the broken handle and cleaned everything first with the vacume cleaner and then with some tissues. I cleaned the cassette compartment and the heads with some alcohol, the motors all seemed to be fine they were running well.
Then i have put everything together again and tried it out. First the cassette...well the sound wasnt very nice but the longer it was running the better it was sounding. Then i tried some recording from the radio section. I let it run for about half an hour and the sound was not bad at all. The tuner section was working 100%..the level meter and VU meter was working. I havent tried it on batteries yet but i dont think there will be any problems, the compartment is very dry and clean with no rust or signs from acid. For me it is a miracle to find another example from this box and i will keep this one for sure...it sounds excellent now with a nice deep heavy bass...a real and rare GHETTOBLASTER from the past..here are some photos..
P.S. I also bought myself the SHARP HK 9000...that is some serious sh.t! Free fitness!! What a heavy boy!!
