Hi, does anyone know if the metal tuner scale behind the glass on the Sony CFS-99 is removable or not? For example, to swap it into another boombox?

If I understand it right, yes it is removable. Basically the tuner cord assembly, tuning knob and the front scale whole section just comes off like one piece. Pretty easy to remove and replace. Once you move all the sliders to one end, it is easy to put them back or else you have look for the tips. The lower two ones are easy to break off if not careful.

Don't try to remove the tuning knob. The tuner wheel in the front will come with the front panel and then will seat perfectly to the tuning axle down under it.

Front speaker section has to come out and then we can take the top panel. A few screws are hidden behind the antenna and 4 of them are on the front.

Top panel and the scale can be easily swapped.

Ok but I’m asking about just the metal scale BEHIND the glass, not the whole top cover. Or are they integrated?

I think it was all integrated to the top cover. My bad! I didn't take a picture of the backside of it. It looks like an Al plate with prints on it. If that is the case it has to come out unless it is slipped in a track and glued at many areas. The tuner dial mechanism is all on that top cover. ~Royce

I sent a message to Fresh Produce on Instagram, he has opened his up many times and he will remember if we swapped the tuning scale on his. He had two units, one US, one JDM and we made one working system, but I don't remember if we swapped the tuning scale.

Chris: Thanks.

Royce: I have a Japan version forever, and would prefer to see if it can be made to USA spec by swapping out that trim and tuner. Basically, want to see if it is even possible before thinking about buying maybe a junk 108 unit. If that trim can't be separated from the top cover, then any unit I find would need to have a good top cover too which might make it more difficult since these CFS-99's don't seem to wear well.

Having another look at this radio again, via youtube and I see why your asking. Those top sections are aluminum with screen printed information, so they tend to be dented or worn. I reached out to Fresh Produce again to ask if he has a US spec he could part with cheap.

OK, got a reply from F.P., no dice on having a spare 99. Sorry

Norm, I opened the box just for taking pictures for you.

It is removable, but we have to re cord it. Looks less complicated to re cord it.

A steel plate with 4 screws are securing the dial and glass to the front and keeping it in the slot. I pushed the dial glass from the front gently and could see it going inwards. So, it will all come out when you remove those 4 screws on the metal plate.
