I would like one too.
I passed on buying one of these turntables twice over the last few years because they where " maybe not working"
I just figured i would wait until a good one showed up :dunce:
Now i know how rare they are and difficult to find !!

Mmm sure looks sexy all together.
I can't believe I have an FH-7 (without the speakers, and not working) and PS-Q3 and not bothered to get any shots of them together. Might have to remedy that. Here's one I prepared earlier..

They're a great little turntable though.

Rock On.

If I'm not mistaken, there's also a subwoofer that goes with the FH7 and maybe also the FH5.

i got lucky when i found mine. i mean it had to have sat in the closet for twenty five years. it had pretty much no wear other than the house repaint spot on it that came right off. mines gonna need a belt at some point but its just a really great boombox.i know i have come across those turntables in the past being completely ignorant of what they were i passed them by. damn :-D

honestly its one of the nicest made of all the sonys i have. its really well constructed and heavy as hell.
the bigger sony fh 215rs i have have remote controls and a very interesting display for the eq.
they are a lot louder than this one. in fact the fh215r pretty much buries the kaboom in terms of volume.
the bass on the fh7 does not sound like a kaboom . the fh215r boxes i have have more bass than the kaboom. hard to believe isnt it but the flat piston woofers on it really pump with thirty watts per side on those big sonys.
i cant see how they could make the same amount of power using the battery packs you could get for them.
the fh7 had a optional battery pack that could be installed in place of the mains power supply.
the bigger fhs had to have the battery pack installed at the factory.

the fh7 has that big transformer sound the bigger boomboxes of its day had. its a very very lush sound and has quite good bass representation. the eq on it as well has a decent amount of boost or cut on the frequencies. the tape deck is very good sounding. i would put it in the same league as the sony pc550 i used to own. in many ways i would say its a better sounding unit and pretty close in terms of volume but i dont have the two to compare.
the digital tuner on these is very good and the shortwave reception is really good for a boombox. the design of the tuner tho is a short coming. there is no preset stations like the m80 had and cumbersome task of dialing up a station can get a bit annoying on the fh7.
there is a front mounted line in for a ipod in the form of a quarter inch jack. you can easily use a eighth to eighth inch jack with a step up adapter for that.
on the back is a pretty good phono stage. its not going to blow you aways but running a record player into the fh7 sounds surprsisingly good.
i think the fh7 volume wise will surprise many people that own one.
when i compare it to the sanyo c7 the sanyo gets left behind on so many levels.
why would i pick the sanyo to compare it too.
well i think when you look at its design those two units were made to go head to head and would have been sitting besides eachother on the shelf back in the day.
the quality of the sony beats the really nice sanyo c7 in almost every area.
i would prefer the sony with a analog tuner or at least a tuning dial instead of the buttons. this being said the quality of the digital tuner on the sony is very good.
my mk3 for sure looks really good in the dark. lots of leds. the eq sliders all capped with a nice red led . when the tape player is going the leds for its levels and the main out leds make it very nice to listen to in the dark.
its heavy and i would say it must be twenty five pounds. maybe a bit more mdf speaker cabs. nice brushed metal trim.
i seem to remember these were really expensive when new.
i cant say its the most potent boombox i have but i could say it is very good.
if i had to get another one i could never find one in the shape mine is in. it really is almost like new. i mean it seems like it was bought yesterday.
i would say its higher fi than a panny 680 but with less bump.
better tape deck than pretty much anything.
cool speaker design. excellent sounding but bad logistical design on the tuner. too many ribbon cables on the back of these for connection. i kind of hate those cables as they seem to fail quite a bit.the other thing is when you see these in a thrift store often they are not hooked up properly or the cable on the back side has become unseated so you should check the backside of them. make sure everything is seated properly.
these might not be grails now heck some folks still argue if its a boombox, but if it had a battery pack that basically contained a bunch of rechargeable dcells its a boombox.
in closing i would say the fh7 was the high water mark for sony boombox design.
the bigger ones that came later on while a bit louder lacked the quality.
these are examples of what the guy with too much money bought for a mini stereo back in the day.
sony knew how to make excellent shortwaves back then and tape decks. apm speakers might not be for everybody but they sound really good to my ear.
