Hi! I want to buy a good 80s boombox that looks good. Of course not very expensive, if possible because I can't afford a high end boombox.

What do you think of the Sharp 6565? Is it any good? It seems a bit lightweight to me and I don't want it to be like the cheap cassette players from the 90s.

How about this MBO boombox?

Not easy to buy a good and good looking boombox for cheap lol. The 6565 is ok, but low end. You tend to get what you pay for

The MBO in the picture looks nice! Don't know about the sound though.

The Telefunken CR 100 is a box I always come back to. With a bit of patience you can find one for 50 Euros or less. They sound great and are easy to work on.

Sound 4010 aka Cobra 425 is a good looking box. It has the same cabinet like the Telefunken but with round speaker grills and completely different components inside. They might go for cheap if you find one.

I saw a Sanyo M4500 go for under 40 Euros go on Ebay just a few days ago. I have the Siemens Club RM 745 aka of it. It looks good and the sound is pretty good. And it has great build quality. Working on it is a nightmare though.

It's hard to recommend a box without knowing what you want to use it for. There are hundreds of good looking 80s models out there. Keep an eye on your local advertisements and decide from look and price I would say.

You are right that I will not find a HiEnd for little money. Not even in dreams. lol but who knows? Maybe I can find something with good looking on low or middle end models.

I forgot the Universum Super Sound 16000. Great sounding box for small money. I love the look but not everybody does.

I’m partial to the GE 3-5259A Blockbuster as everyone here knows. They are relatively easy to repair and maintain and you WILL bust the block with one. Ebay has one I believe. This model was featured in Nightmare on Elmstreet with Johnny Depp, you can’t get any more 80’s than that.

Hi Gerbil, Here in The Netherlands you can still buy ghettoblasters for quite cheap prices.
The GPO you talked about,I had here for some weeks, but I didn't like this one, cheap quality and includes a load-up battery, which is quit poor and fast empty.
Bought this GPO for US$50,--
later I found several vintage ghettoblasters; Here some pictures;
All bought for US$ 40,00 till US$ 70,00

I would prefer to go for a model with non-working tape deck from the late 1970`s/early `80`s to pick them up at low prices then save up for the service.
The most likely reason for them not working is going to be melted belts/idler tyre etc if they are from a reputable brand such as Aiwa,Panasonic/National,JVC,Hitachi etc.
I`d check first for decent reputation repairers in your area to save on large postage costs as many of these boxes were built like tanks and were pretty heavy when compared to the later eggs with CD etc.
Late `70`s boxes may feature the lovely hypnotic VU meters too :clap:LEDs can look good -but often they`re no match ;-)
At the end of the day sound quality is more important to me personally than looks and by the late 70`s /early 80`s good boxes had decent tape decks that would handle chrome and sometimes even metal or Fe/Cr cassettes.
I personally would skip on anything with detachable speakers and graphic equalisers (separate bass + treble controls are fine)
Some boxes also have "loudness, and/or wide stereo" settings which sometimes can be pretty good though.

You could opt for a re-branded cheaper version from one of the big companies also but you`d probably need to do a lot of research to find the original company behind them.
If your not moving it from the house then the weight is less of an issue -as is the number of batteries needed if its mostly mains powered.
Of the select masterblaster posted I`d pick the Palladium hands down in the classy looks stakes. Sencor in second but the double tape spoils it a bit for me .
The Sharp you posted looks okay -but I`ve no idea how good the sound is.

Good luck with the search and post what you manage to end up getting .

most boes don't sound good from the 70's unfortunately but i can recommend one the aiwa tpr 950.......it aso seems the crown 980 was from the late 70's and i can highly recommend that one too....not sure when the telefunken studio was made, could have been late 70's and is regarded as one of the best sounding boxes made chaps

I’ve been seeing Panosonic RX-5100 for sale cheap recently. Great boomboxes, just slightly below the 5150 in sound quality due to its slightly smaller woofers.

I have a few boxes I’m selling if you’re interested. I’m located in the US though. I got a RX-5025 for sale that might interest you. Great midsize box with line in that sounds great. Also a Sanyo C1 and JVC PC150 if you’re interested in a 3 piece

The only boombox I found from your recommendations is the Sound 4010, I like how it looks and it has a convenient price after I negotiated with the seller. It is 100% functional but needs to be cleaned on the outside.
