Hey guys, i was bored the other night
And thought I had som time to kill. Took my 931 apart and started ripping the baffles out. :-O
took 2 hours! I don't have a dremel so a pair of tin snips and wirecutters had to do. My hands are torn up now lol

Anyhow, After hooking everything back up, I did notice a slight improvement. nothing to write home about but the box does breathe better! I am going to be putting an old set of 931 speakers in it and putting vents in the back case for more breathabilty

Hope it will let the box boom some more.

Yeah, it is a slight improvement... Cutting the baffles definitely gets rid of the "hollowness" of the bass.

The i931 will probably never hit hard like a TRC-931 - even with the baffles removed - 'cause the back of the case is no where near as ventilated.

Perhaps your idea of adding more vents will make a bigger difference & give the box far more boom!

Good luck!!

got done with it, very little improvement.

You have to go over 30 to feel/hear any good bass.

The older 931s had more power to me, and the equalizer (not the digital crap on the i931) really helped

My advice, leave the i931 alone and get something that likes to hit hard

I use an EQ app on my ipod touch called EQU when using it with my I 931.
Having the parametric eq bands and adjustable pre amp output control really helps tremendously.
Mine Hits hard with plenty of bass to spare when using the Ipod, but when on radio it falls short
for sure.
Oh well what can one expect when paying under 200. for a brand new boombox???

I just opened the vents a little more and it did help! at around 25-30 it really pumps. I made 1" ports in the back and it is sounding better :-D

My ipod is set on treble booster mode

I agree on the price Hemiguy  You get alot of bang for your buck with this. I paid $125 shipped for mine so I am very pleased, no other 'boxes' in the modern market have anything close to 8" woofers or the amount of chrome on this beauty :-)

making some progress.experimenting with duct tape

It appears that the vents (in the back, need to be covered from the inside. I put 3 strips of Duct tape inside, to cover the slots. this helped keep more of the air in, that way it it directed (the reverb) to the ports behind each speaker.

more pics to follow :hmmm:

You're going about it all wrong, in my opinion...

Swapping the new woofers with older ones shouldn't make a bit of difference & blocking the vents in the middle probably won't help either.

In order to get the bass you want you'll have to have ventilation on par with the TRC-931, which means adding vents across most
of the back case (probably not a good idea for looks sake).

Other than that, the power comparison between the TRC-931 & i931 is equal. Again, ventilation is the problem.
