I'm working on my second restoration, a Magnavox D8443 and have noticed the chrome on the knobs is pitted and starting to come off. Besides trying to replace them all together, what do you use to make them shine again? Paint?

Don't paint em, you'll end up with silver fingers every time you twist a knob.. Trust me
I would be willing to bet someone here could help you find suitable replacements..

I think there might be a handful of shops that could re-chrome them for you, but it would cost a lot of money.....More than it would cost to chrome plate a metal part.

I agree! That is correct! Those paints never dry and it is so bad!

If it is plastics the process is vacuum metalization.
Not many places do this.

It is the same process how you make the reflector of automobiles.

After the metal is deposited there is a UV clearcoat over it for protection.

If it is metal then it is chrome plating.

If it is metal and it looks like rust spots, the spots can be removed with steel wool and vinegar. I did that on a chrome 1930s art deco pendant chandelier and on a set of gholf clubs that stood in garage too long with great results. But won't work on plastic I think and it requires a bit of elbow grease

Thanks, Antoinette, that's another useful tip noted in my book. :-)
