I don't understand....... how these boomers become so addictive.

These things are soooo cool and are really enjoyable. Like last night, my wife and I went for a walk around town and I couldn't resist bringing the SCR-8. So I put in an old Poison tape and we jammed out and walked about 2 miles just for fun. That box is perfect sound and size for every day use. I will get a strap for it later but just holding the handle wasn't uncomfortable at all. Now the Wheely and the 777's will probably be a different story ;-) .

The problem is that boomboxes are like potato chips, you can't have just one  .

Last night I hit the "buy it now" for a 777z :-O
Last week I bought a 777z off craigslist :-O
Last week I bought a Mag. D8300 off ebay :-O
Two weeks ago I got 2 Mag. Power Plays and the SCR-8

Luckily I sold one on ebay yesterday and made about $10 profit from my silly simpathy bid that I ended up winning. This has to slow down eventually! :hmmm:

My list of BBXs now (6 gotten in last 3 weeks :-P ):

-Dynasty Wheely (at Superduper's)
-Sharp GF-777z (on its way home)
-Sharp GF-777z (on its way home)
-Realistic SCR-8
-Magnavox D-8443
-Magnavox D-8443
-Magnavox D-8300
-Sears LXI
-Sanyo M-W800 *pink*
-Sanyo M-X650K

I will do a photo shoot when all my boxes are home. This should be interesting  . Could be a few weeks yet.

Many moons ago, I told the wife that I only "really" wanted two more boomboxes to complete my collection - a Conion C100 (or AKA) and a JVC RC-M90.

Yeah, that didn't work out too well. I think I got about ten of them since then. :-D

The thing is, all the other guys on here are to blame. :-P They keep posting pics of their gorgeous boomboxes and I keep adding them to a list. Damn you all!!

Is that how it started?  I hardly remember anymore.
This whole thing snowballed so fast from that first boomer that I'm not sure how it got out of hand except I could never get to the point where I felt finished. I'm still not there except that I rarely buy the eBay boomer anymore, most of what comes home now comes from the thrifts or the fleas.

Oh no, I hope you guys are kidding! If this is only the beginning of the collection, I will be living in the garage :-O !

Say it isn't so, say it isn't so  .

I feel like I am in an AA meeting asking for help to kick my addiction. Seriously, this will spiral out of control when my OCD kicks in...... wait, it already did!

Self control man! If space becomes an issue, which it will, you will have to decide........ :hmmm:

Decide which storage unit is closest to your house!!!

Set a goal and go from there. You will find you wont use or dont care for the sound of some of your boxes when something else comes around, these are candidates for ditching for [strike]bigger[/strike] better things!

Blu, I think you have forgotten about something...

The Dynasty. :-)

I think that once you get your repaired Dynasty out of the box and plugged in, your boombox [strike]obsession[/strike] admiration will be even more out of control. :-D

I am hopeful that the Dynasty and/or the 777s will trump all the boxes I have and I won't want any other ones because they won't compare to the heavy hitters.

Out of my collection of 10, I dislike the Magnavox boxes the most. They have some alright looks but they really sound like dookie compared to the SCR-8, which is my favorite box while the big ones are away.

Do not hesitate to pickup a Realistic SCR-8, ever! Well worth the $50 I spent on my minty, 100% working, one owner box. I am a sound quality freak so the boxes that don't stack up to what I want to hear will probably be sold off. :-/

There are definetly a handful of boxes I want yet - I think I can wait  ;-)

I like them because they're the perfect lifestyle accesory for someone with lots of free time and a boardwalk town existence. I can't just have one, because they work as fashion accessories, and some are impractical for rainy days, while others aren't blingy or old enough to be my favorites. No box seems to meet all needs, yet few boxes before '85 meet no need.

wow !!! what a quote -
that could be the company creed - :-O

and collecting boxes is a great addiction --
they all have their special sounds and sizes and looks and purposes--

other than some occasional space , money and spouse issues :-)
there is no good reason NOT to collect them

right ????

I know that what I'm about to write will sound sacrilegious, but here goes anyway.

Thanks to years of being addicted to buying boomboxes, I've learned the hard way that I don't have the power or ability to talk myself out of buying them. Telling myself things like, "I have enough" or "I just want these two more, and then I'll be done" has never worked. It's like saying, "Just one more drink, and then I'll never drink again." It's amazing how thristy you get after you say that.

But I've learned a lesson from my cats. I've discovered that, when I close our bathroom door (because a little privacy is nice when you're taking care of business), all they do is yell and claw at the door to come in. But when I leave the door open for them (against my better judgment), most of the time, when I look around, they're not there. Instead, they're sleeping in a favorite chair or eating or curled up on the bed.

It has worked that same way with my boombox addiction. One day I just stopped telling myself to stop. Instead, I told myself (I can't remember if it was consciously or sub-consciously) that I could buy whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it. And I did exactly that... for a while. I left the door wide open for myself! Got a lot of cool stuff, too. But after about a year of giving myself blanket permission to get just about anything I liked - wouldn't you know it? - I realized that my buying had really slowed down. Almost stopped, in fact. More than that, what I realized was that I was honestly, genuinely losing interest in boomboxes! To the point where today I can look at all but the most unusual boombox and not feel the least bit of desire to own it. After years of frantic/manic/obsessive accumulaion of these devices, my interest in them and drive to get them has waned significantly. Not unlike sex. When you can get all you want, any time you want, day after day after day, year after year after year, you tend to (except maybe every now and then out of force of habit) lose interest.

Back in high school, when I worked for a Christmas season at a Fannie May candy store in Chicago, we were told we could eat as much as we wanted (which is what all the new employees, including me, wanted to know) for free while we were at work. We just weren't allowed to take any home without paying. At first, as you might guess, I absolutely gorged myself on candy. Day after day after day. (I must have gained 30 pounds during that Christmas break!) But by the time I left the job and headed back to school in Janurary, I never wanted to see chocolate (or mixed nuts or caramels) again! I didn't buy my next box of Fannie May candy for about thirty years... and even then it was for my wife (although I confess I did sneak a few pieces, just for old time's sake).

So... don't worry about your boombox addiction. It'll take care of itself. Buy all you want (or can afford... don't lose your house or have your lights turned off) for as long as you want. Stick them on every spare shelf and in every spare corner you can find! Enjoy the hobby for all it's worth. Don't try to limit yourself, and don't swear them off, and don't promise yourself that "one more and you'll stop." Because you won't. Just get what you want until you don't want any anymore. And whether you believe it or not right now, that day will come. It always does.

See, I told you this would sound sacrilegious.

In a sense I do agree BSL, I have followed somewhat the same path. Although I still desire boxes I no longer find every box on eBay irresistable, I'm actually able to say "NO" to the BIN's. I am now almost completely content picking up the local thift box every now and then for $5 to $15, this fills my need and definitely has saved my bank account this year. Like you pointed out, over time disires ebb and flow and fighting it like an alcholic doesn't work. :nonono:
