Hi Guys,

Lately I seem lucky to be inundated with nice finds, some in good condition, others not so.

My questions being fairly new here are...

- what do you use to clean them, what works best,
- do you strip them apart, blow out dust etc with compressed air, how far should or do you go?
- do you service the deck, and if so how and what do you do
- any other useful tips, hazards & safety etc.

My way:

> checking all functions when coming home from flea
> blow off the dust softly with air
> clean all switches with contact cleaner
(attention: some cheap prints on the box can get damaged! take care!) :-O
> Cleaning the box with soap water
> at heavy dust, opening the box and take a big clean.
> new belting only when needed
> i take no cockpit spray, because it collects dust again.

...on top of all the cleaners and waxes recommended you should pick up a set of paint brushes...they work best for removing dust from speakers without damaging them. I have a combination of stiff bristle and soft bristle ranging in size from 1/2 inch to 3 inches in width...horse hair brushes seem to work the best...

Paintbrushes are definitely the order of the day for the initial cleaning I find.

I'm a fan of KFC style refresher towelette deallys too for getting crud and dust off as they're not going to be as harsh as household cleaners on the more delicate surfaces radios can have.

Rock On.

I've also used cotton swaps and rubbing alcohol, but test it first before using it on it on painted surfaces. Some of the guys here really dive in and get AMAZING results. For the rest of us, we're lucky to have this resource to read up on before ruining our dream boxes!
