Got this unit from member upbnsfrrfan (Larry) He bought unit off ebay and asked me to restoreIt. So he had seller ship to me. Well it is now fully working..

I did have all new belts on me for replacement. Old belts were melted and I had some cleaning to do to get them off. Power switch was very dirty but I was able to clean it plus all sliders and switches. Heads were cleaned and demagnetized. Whole box inside and out was cleaned. I put some touch up paint on exterior. I also used black permanent marker on speakers after dusting them. I also had to paint caps because they were really in ugly shape. (See pics). I cleaned deck and dusted electronics. Grills were in pretty good shape so I left it alone. Shined chromed as good as I could and aluminum as good too. I also buffed deck and tuner glass. Deck glass has very deep scratches so I did best I could without buffer. Deck fully works including music search.

Sound is very good and picks up stations real nice with antennas fully extended. I tightened antennas and cleaned surface rust and used some Wd40 to aid in opening and collapsing. All in all unit excellent working condition now. Here are some pics and video.

Sorry guys I tried posting pics in order but stupid app kept crashing and only posted in goofy order. Hopefully you get idea

Hi Bill,

Your restoration threads are easily my favorite and that Hitachi now looks fantastic!! :-)

I used your method for the first time this afternoon on some M9998K speakers - the permanent marker method worked a treat and should not affect the sound:

I absoloutly hate "Goo Belt" syndrome!
...But despite the filthy hands, it is extremely satisfying to bring a deck back to life.
Nice work, Bill.

Great work Bill!

I am not a big fan of coloring with a marker or painting speaker cones.
:sadno: :sadno:
Any solvent penetration on the cone paper will soften it and swell also. :-/

If you look under a microscope you can see the damage it did.

Solvent penetration will do irreversible damage to the cone paper.

Damn good job, Bill.

The box looks like my Perdisco TRK-8800RM without the remote input on the bottom right hand side and the blue stripe on the tuner dial... Yeah, it's a very good sounding box. Not much bass tho, but still...

Congratulations.

I agree with you, for the most part, but the "damage" you're describing isn't going to be seen THAT close up, unless you have super sight. Haha. And behind grilles, the "damage" or coloring imperfections won't be seen at all. After the cones dry and stiffen, your point is moot if the job was done carefully - you wouldn't know what he did unless he told you or you bought the box from him and decided to open it up...

Regardless of that, I'm not a fan of putting ink on paper cones 'cause of the very real possibility that they probably weren't originally true black to begin with. However, if that's the look you want, cool.

Thanks guys. I think it turned out excellent.

Royce the paper cones are already over 30 years old and have somewhat deteriorated and the dye in the paper has faded. I highly doubt the damage your speaking of, especially in these speakers which were made in Korea, will affect the performance. As for looks they look 100 times better than when they were faded. And like mono said they are behind grills ;-)

I agree bro Bill! You did an outstanding job!

But I am thinking of a better way to spray the dye on it other than gently pressing with the tip of marker where it can deform! It hurts! Hope you agree with this. I would use an air brush for this application.

We want some air brush application experts to step in and resolve this. I used to have it and now I am not very good at using it.

I love watching a few experts working with air brush.

It is simply amazing!

The great thing about Bills' permanent marker method is that when dry, the cones whilst looking nice and black, don't appear that Jet black colour as per paint.

Whilst attempting a repair of my mothers 13 month old digital radio yesterday, I noticed the near new black speaker cones where exactly the same colour as my newly re-coloured M9998K speakers. ;-)
;-)
The amount of pressure required to apply the ink is so low it hasn't affected the surface of the cones I've done so far. If anything, the surface feels more smooth and new looking.

James... :-)

I think the painted paper cones deforming or getting damage won't happen until....somewhere in the future :-D If ever it does happen, it can always be replace with aftermarket ones. As far as I'm concern, I'm very happy with what Bill did with the Hitachi, he brought it back to life again

Problem with airbrushing is not many people can do this and do it well. I'm also not sure you can shoot dye with airbrush, but I guess if you can it would be the best. ;-)

:agree: Plus when fully dry you can't see lines from marker and color is even throughout paper  And your right about not needing pressure to put on :-)
