Hi everyone this is one of those easy fix for someone buys which never turns out that way .
The problem is the drive cog doesn't turn when play is pressed so the tape is just folding on itself inside the cassette. I have replaced the belts and checked the usual suspects ie the capstan and pinch roller.
I have also checked idler tyres which appear good only something caught my eye, in one of the pics there is a brass pin should there be some kind of rubber sleeve over this for the idler wheel to engage with ?.
In any event it gives me the opportunity to clean all the old grease off.

Does the brass pin turn when in play?
If it does, it looks like it should contact the tire on the reel.
Maybe post a shot of the back side of the first and second pics.

Hi there thanks for the reply and no it doesn't turn so back to the drawing board I just don't get it the belts are turning, fast forward and reverse are good but play absolutely nothing it's like nothing is engaged to make it play.
The old grease has been removed and the mech cleaned, the idler tires are good and the belts new it's a real mystery.

Tinman my fault entirely the brass pin does turn so you were spot on with your theory as its operated by the belt running around the small wheel just above the flywheel.
So would this require some kind of rubber tube to fit over the pin .

Possibly but I'm not sure, I've never had one of these.
Is there something obstructing it from moving enough to contact the rubber tire?

I've never seen this before either both the rubber tire and the metal pin are fixed but it looks like it's the only answer to me in fact I'll give it a try what could possibly go wrong
