I bought this very cheaply at auction for a present for my girlfriend who no longer has a boombox because I stole hers to customise it as a present with the promise that she'd get a better replacement.
I soon found that the unit was cheap (about $12) for a reason; it had been hacked... and poorly at that. Two cabinet screws missing led me to the conclusion it had been worked on before.., yep
Wires everywhere, really terrible soldering jobs, reversed polarities, all of it crap
...so I reversed all the home-job stuff back to original, using a second unit as template. I wanted to start from scratch with my restoration and revival.
After returning it to stock format, I found it had NO action at all! Disappointing! I was very sad actually.., I don't need any wasted money in my life right now
I decided to blast all the switches and pots with my compressor, then used a ton of Servisol-10... Yay!
The unit now works, albeit with a bit of a struggle..., I will use it a lot and apply more contact cleaner as I go, it seems to be on its way to health with prolonged usage! I spent about 7 hours fiddling around inside it so far, with all the soldering, cleaning, and :annoyed: tape belt goo EVERYWHERE!
I replaced the two smaller belts after cleaning the deck but the main drive belt needs replacing still as I didn't have one.
I also want to change the transformer to 240VAC and it pulls 18W and uses 15VDC power, any tips on locating one?
I modified the speaker look a little; with a matte-blackening of the cones and I cut out the six-point inside grille garnish and popped in some nice big chrome dust caps. What do you think? I think it is now prettier AND tougher looking! Just a tape belt and a transformer away from completion!
