Hi everyone, newbie here.

Had a look about, read a few posts..signed up for some advice please :)

I’ve recently got back into cassettes, bought a couple of Walkmans and a tape deck and enjoy recording my own mixes on a pair of decks at home. I wanted a boombox and have just bought a Sharp GF9494. It all works and is in beautiful condition, was owned all its life by a lovely old couple who never took it out the house once. Anyhoo.. as expected the tape player works but now and then chews tapes up. Everything else works perfectly but it’s safe to assume the belts need replacing and some maintenance needs to be done. I’ve bought a set of belts for it and included are a new pinch roller and the little black tube doohicky that needs to go in that little hole with the rod thing through it. I’ve had a good look into what will need fixing and repairing online. I’ve had no experience with servicing something like this before but after watching a complete hour long walk-through on YouTube it doesn’t seem too difficult if done with care. I’m also interested in changing the speakers for newer ones with grills and removing the square grills. Is this difficult to do? Is there anything else I should replace inside That I haven’t mentioned?

It wasn’t cheap so I don’t want to mess it up. Should I attempt to do this myself or pay a professional to do it?

If you are not confident in yourself, look for a repair shop in your city.
As for the speakers, it is better to keep the original ones.
The boombox looks good and it would be a shame to ruin its appearance.

I would give you the same advice – keep it original. This box is very hard to come by in that condition. Once modified, there mostly is no way back and you might regret it in the future.

I have made the experience that the more I dug into boomboxes, the more I appreciated the original design of them. Get yourself a beat up mid boombox for cheap and have a go at it to find out what can and what can't be done.

A tip in advance: The 9494 has a rubber ring on the capstan that on most boxes has turned to goo. Clean the capstan and surroundings with alcohol (this might take a while and a lot of q-tips). As replacement, a fuel tube from an RC car did it for me.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’ve decided I will keep the 9494 original as it’s in such good condition. I have bought a 9191 which isn’t quite as nice so I’m thinking of modding that. After watching Techmoan change the belts, pinch roller and capstan rubber himself I think I’m up to the job so I’m going to do it. Wish me luck.
