With walkman's the Sony WM-D6C, though large, was a 3-head portable known for it's playback and recording (why prices are so high). Did they ever make a 3-head, super high quality PB and REC boomer?

The only recording one I've seen stateside is Mister X's CRS-5000

Marantz (Superscope) made some amazing machines, including the PMD-430 which goes head-to-head with the WM-D6, although it's much larger, so they were a player with portable recording machines.

In the 70's a lot of boxes were sold with stereo taping in mind. Options like stereo mics, mic-mixing made these garage band favorites. Tascam Portastudio one-upped it with their four-track recorders.

HiFi boomboxes is another subject, there's a bunch of "compos" that might make the cut but at the end of the day the tiny speakers they came with have a hard time lighting up any room

Two different topics:
1) Which boomboxes had 3 heads
2) Which boomboxes have high quality tape decks

There are plenty of 2-head boomboxes with better quality decks than that 3-head Marantz, lol

Fair breakdown Reli. Thanks for clarifying.

The d6c does not have 3 heads although it is one of the best walkmans although a bit on the large side
You're correct and I was wrong. It had a pointed Amorphous Head, not rounded. It is known as the best sounding of it's class, large yes. Just trying to find out if boomers were ever in the hi-fi class.

In terms of hi-fi sound, there are many boomboxes that qualify, although some are too heavy to carry:
Telefunken Studio 1
Telefunken HP800
Grundig Party Center 2000
Pioneer CK11
Sony FH series
Rotel RPM-10 and RPM-20
JVC RC-M90
Sanyo MX720
And a few others...
