My obsession with boomboxes grew partly out of my parents' refusal to lend or give me any money towards purchasing a radio big enough to give me a hernia!
Back in the mid-80s I'd salivate in street shop windows at the dozens of pairs of chromed-out speakers in gray, black, or even maroon or blue cases with antenna(s) stiking out the top. Some with one, or maybe two cassettes in between, and 9 out of 10 had SHORTWAVE bands! Yes - you'd be surprised on how many of these boxes the SW bands are not an afterthought and do pull in a load of stations around the world after dark.
They did get me a small one a "reasonable sized" one for Christmas 1984 - it was a Sears version of a small Sanyo with 4 bands - the band switch was on the back - an orange slider, and mic inputs on the left side panel. I've been collecting them here and there over the years, some big(TRC-920) some small(The bathroom Panasonic with input jacks so I can hear my mp3 in the shower). And of course, the Magnavox at left - which sadly only the tuner works. I treat all my boxes with care, storing the ones I don't readily use in dark, sun- and dust-free closets. I have a modest "display" in the bedroom, and I never "BLAST" any of them as I might have, back in the '80s, when presumably none of us knew better(!) They have solid cabinets and solid sound, which compliments the clean sound of mp3s. And none of their antennas are dirty and they all stay aimed the way I aim' em - none of them are allowed to droop!
I'm a fan of all NY sports who mourned the day both Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium closed forever. I also enjoy swimming, reading, and entertaining with my mp3 music - on my box or yours! NASCAR? Can you say FIXED?? That #48 ruined the sport. Rollercoasters? You Jersey folks have a gem in "Nitro" at Great Adv. And those of you north, in Springfield Mass - too bad they "re-branded" your Superman Ride of Steel - Bizarro or whaddeva, it's still my fave! Looping coasters? Can you repeat after me . . OVER RATED!! Not tall enough, not steep enough, not fast enough - and the shoulder thingies ruin the airtime! Join me on El Toro - the line is much shorter.
