Hey guys, I'm new here and seeking help. I picked up a 8989 II at a yardsale for 3$ WITH THE BOX :-D
The only downside is it doesn't come with any power cord. I tried a regular DC/AC 12v adapter pack and I could hear a faint hum when I pushed from [tape] to [Radio] and could spin up tapes and what not, but none of the lights came on and I couldn't get anything to play :hmmm: It has a weird 3 prong power cord place and a DC 12v plug as well. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great!!

Doesn't sound too promising to be honest. If you're getting a hum from 12v DC & no sound, you're amp circuit is probably fried. Just a guess but I'm not too experienced with this type of problem but if you are using a DC source, then the transformer is not the problem or the rectifier circuit. Could be bad caps on the amp circuit. Any way you could open it up & look at the physical condition of the unit. Maybe you'll get lucky with a good Deoxit cleaning.

This is why I said to try different power sources first before opening and drawing to any conclusions. If none of power sources work then he needs to check power switch. Could just be very corroded!!! But without going through all the steps and jumping to conclusion about there being bad components your just lining yourself up for more work when it may be just something simple. After all most of these units sat in dirty garages, attics and basements for 20 plus years

Thanks man! I'm surprised by its quality actually! It sounds amazing on comparison to any modern day box I have listened to plus it's built like a brick wall

btw I'm VERY jealous of your VZ-2000!

WOW MINT!.
Just like BadBoyBill said, I would always trust batteries or AC plug.
I noticed most new universal ac/dc adapters are utter garbage and don't give proper voltage. So you get hum & no power.
Most are probably meant for low milli amp & low watt units, not these boomboxes.
But laptop power supplys are great :)
