Hi guys,

Thanks for the add. I am 47 next month and collect 1980 BMXs. I have never owned a boombox and always wanted one. I bought the Sharp GF 555 (arrived yesterday). I think the utopia would be to own something like a 9696. I wanted it to remind me of the 80s, breakdancing and that whole incredible era.

My GF555 is in fairly decent condition. The radio works, although when you adjust the volume it sounds terrible. Needs new aerials, lots of cleaning and I think belts.

I have never restored anything electrical so yesterday I carefully separated it into three parts, body, front and back. Seems to be a guy on YouTube who shows how to get the cassette mechanism out.

Any help with GF 555 on belts I need, aerials and things to watch out for would be great. Going to browse through now and see what's going on!

Welcome from a fellow northerner :-)

The 555, like most better Sharps, is really well engineered so great to work on. The little rubber tyre within the deck always fails so will need replacing but it’s been covered on here loads of times.

Oh and the aerial is the same as Sharp QT250 which you can often get dirt cheap as they’re junk.

Ay up... as only us northerners understand! Thanks for the kind reply. Will have a look at the rubber tyre question! Just currently sat with a cotton bud and lighter fluid tidying up the front facia. Years of someone's dirt! (Grim)

Aerial help is incredible! Thank you, I will get myself those today! Really great to meet you! Pictures will follow :)

Best way to clean them properly is strip the casing then let it have a soak in a soapy bath!

Hi @Northerner!

So.... I ended up buying another GF 555 that is in better condition! Will get some photos up :)

I bought a Sharp QT250 to get the aerial. It's in beat up condition but works and the aerial looks mint! However.... can you spot the issue?

Have I bought the wrong QT250 it is too long. You never mentioned hacksaws may be needed!

All help greatly appreciated and wonder if anyone needs this mint condition aerial?

Incredible machines, beautiful, all of them!!
Being brought up close to Bradford in Queensbury, I remember riding out to the flappets for hours.. first thing I did was a smallish jump and fell off... on the way home exhausted got a puncture in Clayton Heights lol... happy days..
