Didn't even realize I was into boomboxes until I looked at what I keep dragging home and messing with.

I am in the Boston area and into most things audio. For boomboxes, this is the best I have, a Panasonic RX-6400. It works but needs to be taken apart and have the switches cleaned. It sounds good but I think it could sound better. Perhaps over the winter I will look at some easily reversible mods to the speakers and possibly the amp/preamp sections to improve it.

that big panny may need no mods --after you get it running to spec :-)

Thanks!

Yeah, I am not going to dive in until I get all the switches & pots cleaned then reevaluate. The woofers seem well matched to the enclosures as bass is good. It isn't thumping deep but it is very balanced and the midrange very nice. But it sounds a bit harsh when turned up regardless of source (FM, CD, or high-bitrate MP3's).

It was however virtually unlistenable when I got it and steadily improved the longer it ran. Then it hit a plateau and got no better. I suspect this is just how it sounds. I am being overly critical and comparing it to my home audio gear. It does sound way better than any of the other boomboxes I have but I just want MOAR!!!!!!

Welcome! And no bones about informing you that you hav a well sought after unit in the 6400. It's nice but for me it is and tends to sound like a PA machine. A damn good sounding one regardless.

Yes, I saw one of the price discussions at stereo2go. This RX-6400, like every boombox I've had over the last 5 years, came from my town's transfer station, aka dump. There is a too-good-to-throw-away area there and boomboxes are one of the things that no one touches. Anytime I see a nice one I snag it. The bulk of them are 90's machines with CD's. If they work I drop them off at the Salvation Army so they can sell them.

When I found the RX-6400 it was the speakers I saw first. At first I thought they were from a corporate audio-visual system like a portable PA. I saw the second set of clamshells and figured it was another set of speakers. I almost didn't go check them out figuring one set of speakers was enough. Then I did open that set up and did a Keanu Reeves "Whoa.......!!!!". Needless to say it all came home.

This was yesterday's dump orphan, a JVC PC-Y777. Everything works and it sounds great. I am keeping it. It has a "subwoofer" in the center section that actually does a good job. It's one--note at ~80Hz but blends with the speakers quite nicely. Plus it has a AUX input so I can run MP3's or CD's into it and the tuner section is excellent. Anyways, here it is in all it's Nextel paint glory -
