I feel like a dummy, I already posted a topic without properly introducing myself. Hi everyone, my name is Ken. I just recently bought two Trc-931's off eBay, one i believe is a first gen, the other a second. I'll try to post up pics the next day or so.

I'm new to the realm of the boombox, these are my first two, I've already started my restoration of them, I think you'll all be happy with my progress. I cannot believe how much better these sound than pretty much any of the new stereos ive had/heard. Especially for them being as old as I am (27).

Anyways I felt I should introduce myself, looks like you have a great forum here, ill try to get some pics up in a day or two, as im on my "dumb-phone" right now.

UPDATE with Pics!!!

Okay so here's some before/after pics of both of them, should I post a link in the "Restoration" section too? Anyways, you can basically see they were just a little dirty, the 1st Gen had two broken antennas, and two of the tape deck buttons were busted off. The owner couldn't get it to power on with the cord... but said he hadn't tried batteries, so the first thing i did was put batteries in it and...... you guessed it, it worked!!!! seems that all of its functions work actually. Here's the pics.

After:

2nd Gen Really just needed some cleaning up, everythings there, had a bent antenna, everything seems to work.

Welcome to the forum Ken!

You'll fit in here as you're clearly as 'sick' as the rest of us as you've already bought two of the basically the same model...a sure sign of a boombox addiction and you do it on your first hit lol :) Top work! :)

Look forward to seeing the pics of the resto

Hope my pictures aren't too big... or sloppy. Tell me if you guys think I got them for a reasonable price, the 1st Gen, like I said, doesn't work with the cord right now, but works perfectly with batteries, and I spent $8 in antennas, a dab of hot glue for the buttons, I paid $76 plus $35 shipping, about $110 invested. Haha, I guess $130 if you count all TEN batteries

The 2nd Gen though... Everything works, everythings there, except trying to straighten the antenna I snapped it of course, so I spent another $8 in antennas, bought that for $175 plus $30 shipping, so about $205 invested..

Little over $300 for both. Not bad right?

Welcome to tha' hood Ken...you won't stop at two... :-D
We'll see, I showed my wife the first one... her response was "OH MY GOSH... What a waste of space!!!" my reply was "An awesome waste of space!!" So when I brought the second one home, because I "Accidentally" won the auction   . She said, "That's it... no more boomboxes!!!" So... until we move and I get the garage that will hold ALL of my cars... till then, I might just stick with these two... :-/ maybe...

HI Ken, Welcome to the World's best forum!

The good thing is that there is still so many nice boomboxes out there waiting for you.

Once the "boombox bug" gets in the system, there is no escape.

Now I am calling mailman on his cellphone to know his location for getting my boombox package directly from him.

All this to hide it from Sally. :-D

Very cool having 2 generations. I had all generations at one Time but traded my 1st generation. I have my original minty 2nd generation which I bought new in 1989 and a minty 3rd generation ( both fully working). I also own 4 I931's :-)

I would say issue with your 1st generation is a dirty ac/dc switch. If you don't have contact cleaner you can use some rubbing alcohol to clean inside of switch. That should help get your ac back running. Also make sure it's set to 110/120. It might be set on 220volts ;-)
