Just want to say hello and introduce myself. I joined Boomboxery a few weeks ago and been lurking around reading some great threads.
I'm not really a boombox collector, but definitely a boombox enthusiast. I came across this forum looking for a boombox for a Lloyd Dobler halloween costume. I couldn't find either a Toshiba RT-SX1 used in the promo shots or the Sharp GF-7600 used in the movie so I settled for a similar looking Sharp GF-A2 I found on eBay for 20 bucks.
On the plus side, I did find this great forum with some knowledgeable folks who's brains I hope to pick.
FM tuner on the GF-A2 doesn't seem to lock in any station, it always sounds sort of staticky. I don't have the equipment to adjust a radio tuner . So I don't think I can fix that myself.
Does anyone know of a repair shop in New York City that does boomboxes?
I found one that specializes in high end audio equipment, but they charge a hefty fee just to look at it and Nick Vivid, who used to repair boomboxes, doesn't seem to be doing boomboxes anymore.
If I can't get the tuner fixed on the Sharp GF-A2 I'll just gut it and put all new electronics in it, and make a custom thing out of it with Bluetooth and media player.
While searching eBay I ended up getting a JVC RC-M70JW and a RC-838JW. So I'm sort of at the start of a collection. And I'm determined to get get my hands on a JVC M90, but not for 2500 bucks that they're asking for on eBay now.
The JVC M70 is in nice shape, I just need a battery cover. I'll post in other threads any questions I have about adding Bluetooth and LED's to it.
On the 838, I was duped on eBay. The seller didn't list any of the problems it had, like completely filthy inside or none working parts and sticky sliders. At least the tuner works great, I can fix everything else, I hope.
Anyway, hello Boomboxery! I look forward to chatting with you and maybe even meeting some New York City members if they have meets or whatnot.
Nelson
