HAVE YOU EVER HAD A GREAT YEAR BECAUSE OF A BOOMBOX?

1983 was the year I got my first boombox and it was a great year for me....

In the summer of 1983 I saved every nickel from every odd job I could find. I saved up and got my new Lasonic TRC-920 at the Saugus swap meet in Saugus, California. My old mono box had made many laps around that swap meet with me. But the day I saw the radio booth at the swap meet and saw the BRAND NEW 920 high on the top of the main shelf as the crown jewel, the “Look But Don’t Touch” radio. I knew I had to have it.

I still remember the Asian lady working at the booth (hmmmm, maybe that’s why I find Asian women so hot and married one, they remind me of the woman that sold me my 920.….hmmmmm I wonder) I remember her asking me with a smile….. “Are you going to buy?” I assured her…I WAS A PAYING CUSTOMER and then whipped out my big stack of one dollar bills and multiple rolls of dimes and quarters!

Being a kid, this was the single greatest purchase I had made to date! I made sure that when I showed up to buy that radio, I had every cent down the last penny! To bad I forgot to include money for a set of D cells.
As I ran through the swap meet with my giant cardboard box filled with the things dreams are made of looking for my parents, ready to tell them “We can leave now”. Only to find out that they still had a lot of shopping to do. I remember sitting near the exit, staring at that cardboard box. Wishing I could open it up, put batteries in it and strut the “Meet” with all guns blazing. But I forgot to factor in batteries.

I waited till we got home to open it up. I couldn’t risk contamination from the swap meet or the chance of losing any documentation that may have been in there without reading it first.

For the rest of the summer I managed to somehow have batteries. My tape collection (the same one I have today) was fresh and new and all the tapes had the little felt pieces!

The cassettes: Judas Priest’s “Screaming For Vengeance”, Rush’s “Moving Pictures” and Triumph’s “Allied Forces” were always in my back pocket every single day of the week.

My mom had already taken Iron Maiden’s “Number Of The Beast” away from me three times but I still managed to procure another copy! I still remember her crying.

Van Halen’s “1984” album was still a year away with all it’s god forsaken K-E-Y-B-O-A-R-D-S!

1983 was the year of the “US FESTIVAL” in Southern California and Heavy Metal Sunday broke attendance records for any previous concert in the United States and I was there!

I was getting my groove together. My hair was growing longer (and I had hair!), I was working it out with the ladies and had worked up some strong pick up lines that did not include me getting me slapped!

My car may have still been in pieces in the driveway, but my Lasonic TRC-920 did a hundred thousand miles that year…and the next….and the next….

Yep, 1983 was a good year…a good year indeed!

SO THE QUESTION IS THEN TO YOU….DID YOU HAVE A GOOD YEAR WORTH MENTIONING THAT INCLUDES A BOOMBOX?

Funny you should mention 1983...for me it started on Christmas day 1982. I new I was getting a radio for Christmas and has pointed out several to my Dad. When I tore of the gift wrap and saw it was a Panasonic 5150 I was elated. I also got a subscription to the Columbia House music club so I could order all the cassette tapes I could handle!! :w00t:

Getting that box in 82 ensured that the summer of 83 was the best summer of my life!! My brothers best friend was a DJ so I had the best house mix tapes, I had my first girlfriend with real breasts (I was only 13), and I got my first job (a paper route) so I always had money for fresh batteries...and to top things off my best friend got an M70 so hanging out at the park with both of our boxes blasting music got us all the attention from the young ladies...that is what summer is about right?? Anyway that is a year that I will never forget, and it is that year that fueled my love for boomboxes that still burns today!... :breakdance:

Not sure it was a whole year. But I think it was 85 or 86, when I bought my M90. I saved like you did. And I traded in my Sanyo C-9 plus 500 cash.
I took it out of the box in the store. Didn't even care about the manual or any of that stuff. Put in batteries I had brought. And walked down Yonge Street with my fellow "b-boys":) That was very memorable. Hanging around my local park, walking up and down Yonge St blasting funk, hip-hop, and reggae. That was a good year :-D

Yep, that's how it's done! Wow, hitting the streets with a brand new M90. How much were those new? And you were smart enough to bring batteries!

It was sometime in the beginnig of the school year 83/84. I had a small weekend job at a paper stand making around $20 a weekend. I had a small mono emerson with casette deck and wanted to upgrade to stereo. It took me 3 to 4 weeks to save like $60 and every weekend I sold papers I looked through the sale ads to see what i could afford. I then had gone to the local Venture and picked up on sale a panny rx5010 for $49.99. It wasn't the best looking or sounding but it was stereo :-D

Well as I said it was not the best so a few months later I had saved a little more $$$ and went back to Venture with the panny in its original box and returned it and picked out a 3 piece new lenox model # ct 772 for $ 79.99. This box was a liittle bigger, was louder, had more buttons and switches, and more lights with the led meter and the speakers could come off. How neat was that

So again I used that bbx but for some odd reason it just did'nt look or sound like I wanted so once again i had saved up more money to get a bigger and better box. So as I saved I had located a couple other bbx's on the other side of town at Zayer. So on the weekend of the big sale I packed away the new lenox and rode my bike to venture to get my $$ back. Then I had to ride a few more miles to get to the other side of town at Zayer. The whole trip I had a hard time deciding which bbx I wanted. Both boxes were bigger and took 8 d cell batteries. Both were on sale for $99.99. So the boxes I was referring to are the Magnovox D8443 in silver and the C.E.C OL-7540 (my avatar)... So I was so desgruntled when i got there that it took me well over 3 hours to decide :hmmm:

I had to decide between a well known maker (Magnavox) to C.E.C. The mag was larger and had 5 speakers but the C.E.C had 2 tape decks more buttons and switches. It had an input for phono and more led's and it sounded alot better. Well I weighed my options and went with the C.E.C. Well that was the best move I could make because in that summer of 1984 my friend and I went everywhere with our bbx's blaring all the cool rock stuff  So yeah I would have to say the summer of 84

My freshman year in High School in 80/81 was my pinnacle year for my boomboxing. I had saved and traded my way up to a Panasonic RX-5100 that went all over town with me. I had an annoying habit of running that box well into distortion territory but this box was loud and held it together pretty good and it ran for a long time on the batteries. I had no idea how much better other boxes were or I would have been selling my body for one of those grail type boxes.

I eventually sold the box to my younger cousin who proceeded to knock on to the garage floor from the top of a refrigerator. :'-(

This is from an eBay auction but my box was exactly the same.

GREAT STORIES GUYS! That's what I'm talking about....except Master Blasters sad story of demise, sorry to hear that! :-/ But at least you found another one! :-D

Bad Boy Bill, amazing you were able to trade up so many times. Is the radio in your avatar the actual radio you bought at Zayer's?

Sorry to say No  I guess from carrying it around so much that one day while I was carrying it the handle broke and the box fell on the concrete :-O Well i took it home, and being only 15 years old i glued and taped and tried to screw but it never was the same :annoyed: I believe my parents tossed it sometime later but ov course years later after trying to figure out the name brand (being so odd) I was able to get my hands on 4 of them and piece them back to what is a very nice unit.. ( Ira helped out with one)

Lucky you were able to get your hands on enough versions to build one!

Don't worry, my first TRC-920 took the same path. But the truth of the matter is, that radio was literally played to death! It was in my hand day and night. After all they are only made of plastic and not even today's high impact plastic at that! I tried so hard to take care of it, but accidents happen and wear and tear happen and in the end, I was a kid that didn't have a clue what I was doing!

Ah yes Good timing as I have just purchased a lovely SANYO 9994 {yet to recieve} That box was 1983 for me despite my mate owning it and it being given yes given to him from his sister, Mics and all.
We would go everywhere together with that box. It was mad. And in the same year we were at another friends house having a party getting older bro,s to buy beer. [as 14 yr olds do haha} and this particular friends mum taught at a local dance studio and of course she had brought some descent portable sounds so my friend dragged it out for our sneaky little pool room party and i can still remember looking at this thing and going man what a different blaster from my other friends!!!! Well of course Sanyo 9998,s are different looking arent they?????

Took till 41 yrs of age to own both :-/  :'-( :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Man-great thread!

For me it's many years but 3 are especially incredible boombox years!!
(1)1980'-Manhattan Electronics District May of 80' Brand new Sanyo M9970 for I think $149.00.
Had it for a couple of years but in about 83' I sold it to my neighbor and had until he died in 86'!:(
Worked great & was heavy and just loved it! Even bought some new cassettes for it in Manhattan!!
My first stereo boombox!!!

(2) 1981'!! It was the year I graduated and that fall I went to the local electronics store in the Ridgedale mall in Minnetonka,Mn.Bought the Sharp GF-8989II!!!!!!
Cost me 189.00 brand new in box!! Man I wish I knew about the value of boombox boxes then!
Man that fall was so special-all the cassettes that I listened to and all the girls I was hanging out with-what a special year!!!!!!! Still have the demo tape but am searching for my original!! :hmmm:

(3)1985'-My 3rd.Brand new Stereo Boombox-The JVC PC-55JW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was retailing for 699.00 on the shelf and next to it for 50.00 less was the PC-550JW (the black version)
It settled for the floor model for 599.00!! It was at Dayton's Dept. Store but I tried to get the box-they didn't have it anymore but did get me the owners manual and all papers!!
This boombox was & is still insane!! So powerful and new! It was so clean-hardly been on the floor for much time!
I still have this boombox and works 100% and have all papers and receipt!!
I am extremely fortunate to have been in the 80's and had the best of times in the 80's with these boomers!
It's funny as 1983' was probably my favorite year for using the GF-8989II!! So many special woods and partying times!!!

1985' was the best in music as was 83'-the 2 best years in music!!

Great thread-Boomboxes rule as do the 80's!!
Have a great week-GB. :-) :-D   :choco: :surf: :surf: :-O

This year is my first year of boombox ownership, but I'd say it's been a fine year in large part because of it. I carry mine everywhere when I'm out, even my tattered and arm-straining JVC-M70, running them like it's 1983 again. They follow me to City Hall, down the blocks of the city, to parties, people's houses- even the occasional woods foray. I've belted out prince to a good ten crusty kids out by a dumpster of a night club, jammed electro for a sidewalk dance party till the cops broke it up, provided a soundtrack for a hoola-hooping troop, blasted two hours of 80's metal at City Hall to over twenty people, and jammed out to nostalgia-ridden hipsters during the intermissions of a basement show. All that and more. I've become like LL Cool J. I can't live without my radios. Now, if only I had the bank and arm-strength for a beater M-90.

Oh yeah, and on a side note, I own a CEC OL-7540 in near-mint shape. I like the thing, as it's really bloody loud, but it sure does have rigid woofers. To bad it seems to get no respect on the sidewalk. I know it's something special, but most people just think it's puny because it's small - at least 'till it does its thing.

Awsome   Thanks for positive feedback  and if you need any decals for yours you may want to ask Bobby. He had some made up for my collection that i was very happy with :-D but I think he did not so he never put them under the labels list.... These are just other names this bbx was under

Awful lot of akas for such a rare box, badboybill. Have you been inside? If so, how's the build quality? Does it use Japanese electrolytics and ICs? Is the soldering clean? It feels pretty well-made for a generic Taiwanese box, but I've never opened it up to resolve the mystery - never had to. Its prior owner fitted it with fresh belts, and I can't think what else it needs aside from fretting over its broken battery level tester function.
