Where is the fine line between collecting and hoarding?
I've had a 'half joking' breakdown of that topic with my girlfriend that lives with me. I've stated that as long I have a place to properly use them when you want and for nice 'decor' in the home office (14 in there currenlty) and my man cave downstairs (like Shanes on the shelves), it's not technically hoarding. But then when you are starting to just stack on each other and just all lined up on the floor like they aren't getting even the light of day, then it might qualify as hoarding. Shane looks to be riding that fine line like I am now, and a certain 'decent' hoarder obviously has long ago crossed that line. Luckily I have an unfinished room next to the 'man cave' so I might just have to get that room finished out with some nice built in's and it'll be a boom boom box room until we starting having kids, then I'm screwed.
So I think it's about about how much space you have to properly showcase/use/shelve your boxes. I think any of us that live with anyone else are limited to whatever space we have in a home office, man cave, unfinished area and worst of all garage. Once any of those rooms you can use are out of 'proper' space, then you are getting into hoarding.
And of course I've tried to use the comeback of bringing up how she has 20 pairs of shoes in the bedroom to my 0, another 20 in the guest room, 10 in the front closet, and 20+ in the unfinished area downstairs. Not sure that comeback worked all that well, so I suggest you don't go there either.
