I finally spied some competition at my local Goodwill, the one I frequent the most. I noticed a roughly 60 year old man pushing a cart around the electronics isle with a bunch of electronics and being the curious type I walked by his cart and took a glance. This guy had a dvd player, receiver and three walkmans in his cart but I couldn't tell what they were. I've never seen more than one good walkman on the shelf but somehow most of the walkmans as junky as they are sell, this guy must have a collection of crappy walkmans. :hmmm:

Anybody else spotted some of their competition at the thrift stores?

theres a few guys i bump into every now and again at the thrift stores.
some of them are nice enough guys.
some of them no well enough to head for the exit if they see me in there.
i mean twice now i have had to school a couple of idiots on manners when they attempted to scam a item i was going to buy out of my hands.
lol. i am kinda of glad i only hit the thrifts every now and then these days.
i am finding craigs to be my favorite source of used stuff now.
the days of the thrift store are over i mean a lot of the volunteers there now buy the stuff on the shelves.
its gotten so lame in vancouver that a lot of them thrift stores will put fifty bucks on a broken down egg covered in filth.
occasionally tho a nice 80s one piece shows up and the people working there are stupid enough to assume beacause its got no cd player that its not too desireable.
meh. thrift stores are a lottery for the most part. sometimes you get really lucky but its about one in thirty you get something cool. one in a hundred you get something amazing.

Bill, I understand and to a point I agree the only difference is in my area the thrifts aren't dead yet. In the last couple of months I've picked up a really nice walkman, 5 boomers and about 10 or so nice sealed cassettes. I've passed up a lot of questionable items including home gear so as long as I keep finding some goodies like this every now and then I'll keep going. When they dry up like yours then I'll slow down I'm sure.

I came to Baltimore Maryland in 83
I remember a street that had at least 5 boombox shops on it, so I know those boxes are in this town somewhere.
So every friday I go down to my favorite thrift at the opening of the doors time.
I always see 3 or 4 retirees that walk to the electronics department with me.
They just like looking at and sometimes buying radios. any radio. I think all men love radios.

One time I arrived late and this dude had grabbed 6 radios and he was inspecting them.
5 fugly eggs and a panasonic boomer with rca inputs.
I tryed to talk him out of the Panny, told him I was a collecter.
He said " Sorry man, gotta get here early to get the radios!"

I don't know of any boombox collectors in my area, but guys are always looking at any radio
And my thrift store still marks it low if it only plays cassette.
I hope they never wise up

Cheers OSS :afro:

you know i never have been too bothered with people who buy things i want before i can get to them. even the dudes who resell the stuff dosent bother me.
its the long winded tales some of these guys try to spin when you are in there. i mean its like the guys who come up to you on skid row and ask if you can help them out beacause they lost there wallet and need to get home for christmas.
i mean dont get me wrong i am a very compassionate person i just find the bullshit resume and you know what oss if it was me i would have let you take that panny. depending on the mood i was in and how much it cost i might even have bought it for you and said merry christmas even if it was in july because thats the kind of guy i am.

i have LOTS of people where i live that basically live in the thrift stores. my only chance is to get lucky on my occasional visits or spy something not on the shelf when i take a wizz in the backroom. mostly nothing that great anyway... :-/
