A few weeks ago a friend of the family popped over with some interesting news. He often goes to a local auctioneers, but never sees any radios. I've always made sure he knows what I'm looking for, but he's found very few over the years that meet the criteria.
When he came over this time he was sure he found one I'd like. It was up for auction at 11am that morning, so I thanked him profusely and called the auction house from work and put a bid on it. I ended up winning it for $25, but I had no cash on me. My sister was going into the city that day as luck would have it, so I asked her to pick it up and said she can give it to me for xmas. She'd just been saying to me a couple of days beforehand that she wanted something else for me and if I had any ideas to let her know, so this worked out very well!
The description I'd received off my friend was that it was large, had a tape deck and a big tuner section and it was a Silver. Now, this was a pretty broad description but I was assuming it was one very similar to one the Rich sony_apm_fan brought down to my place on one of the occassions he visited. And I loved that model, so thought it was a safe bet this one was the same.
Xmas day comes and I finally get to open up my mystery Silver. Lo and behold, it isn't the same one Rich brought down. Oh no. Instead was the Silver ST-888 Space Master II!!!! Now, to those not aware this is one HELL of a radio!!
For a start she is definitely LARGE! I'm always skeptical of the casual persons interpreation of what constitutes a 'large' or 'huge' boombox. Often times they're midsize and not in the realms of what we collectors would call BIG. But this Silver is very sizeable, around M90 size, but deeper. The big thing on this model is the tuner. I've never, ever seen a boombox with this level of options. It's got ELEVEN bands and an array of tuning controls much more at home on a World Receiver style radio. Out of my 75+ boomboxes this is the only one I've had any luck with picking up any SW broadcasts. And with this thing I was picking up a dozen or so stations by just playing about on a couple of the 11 bands!!! Amazing!!
One of the other insane features of the ST-888 is the antenna array. THREE antennas including a novelty-sized 5 foot one are obviously no small part of this boombox's tremendous reception range.
Hot stuff!
The sound is very nice and balanced with a great amount of detail and a lovely warmth to the sound. Surprisingly she only takes 6 D's to power as well, so we're not looking at the loudest radio ever here, but the overall range is very acceptable. The deck needs rebelting and it's only running on battery power at the moment, theres a couple of marks on the top of the top I'll need to sort out, but the front presents beautifully. Including the original point of sale sticker on that monstrous tuner dial.
Needless to say I was super happy to score this and even more so as a xmas present. Stupendous!!!
Rock On.
