In keeping with Bobby's speaker work I thought it was about time /i tried some new speakers in my GF-9000. This radio is notorious for having very flat bass in the model with the white speakers. I procured some nice vintage JVC tower speakers who's tweeters had already been transplanted in my GF-777 with marvellous results so I thought I'd swap out the Sharp woofers for the JVC ones. My Gf-9000 is a bit of a beater and is by no means mint condition, so I figured it's worth a try especially as this is one of my favourite carry-around boxes.

As you can see, the JVC woofer is a cinderella-perfect fit. The Sharp woofers are very stiff but these ones have a generous amount of cone travel so I figured there must be some improvement to the bass with these. The swap was a painless as possible, and didn't even require any soldering thanks to the speaker lugs being the same size.

Side by side comparison shot. I was very tempted to paint the cones white, but with the speaker grill being so dense (unlike say a TRC-931) a lot of the speaker is hidden. The grey colour of the JVC woofers isn't terribly dark and I thought they'd still look good. The dustcaps aren't chrome either and I thought this dull metallic looking type wouldn't look that great with white cones to show up the contrast, especially once the grills are in place.

And here they are all in place! I was really impressed with how they blend with the overall design and colour wave of the GF-9000. The bars across the speakers work as a suitable distraction to the dull metallic dustcaps too.

Now the main thing: the sound!

These speakers have improved the sound range tenfold. It's no M90 or C-100F, but it has a much more dynamic range that thuds along with the low end and also gives a much more open sound stage for the tweeters.

Well worth the effort for those who love their 9000's but aren't in love with their sound.

Rock On.

OOOOO so it is possible to speaker swap.. but what about wattage? does that matter?? lets say the old speaker is 20 watts and the new speaker is 40 watts. will that make a difference or no? awsome swap though. it looks good! blends in!!

When it comes to speaker swaps, the most important thing is the ohm rating. You want something as close to the original ohm rating as possible. Of course, you want equal or greater wattage handling too.
